Are there any portable Air conditioners that will run on a Honda 1000i ?

I got a really good deal on a Honda 1000i generator but after testing it out on a few air conditioners in friends houses that ran at around 8000 BTU’s, I’m coming to the conclusion that I likely don’t have enough power to run even a small portable air conditioner.

Are there any Air Conditioners that are smaller and run on less then 5,000 BTU’s (that are also reasonably affordable)?

Or am a facing the fact that I may need a Honda 2000I….

Also is a 2000i strong enough to run some thing around 8,000 or 10,000 BTU’s? (which is mostly what I find when I Google search)

Of note, I had to temporarily disable "Eco Mode" on my EU2000i before it would even start our old AC unit (~12,000 BTU I think?). Once it was running you could throttle down to Eco Mode.

A Honda EU 1000i will probably be able to run a 5000BTU AC. However, it may not have the power to start the AC, which requires more power. I'm sure you can use your Google-Fu to search for air conditioner prices online.

While AC is definitely nice, why don't you consider making an evap cooler instead of an AC unit? It'll cost far less, and BM has ideal conditions to use one effectively.

+1 to this. I dumped my ac and made a evap cooler last year. Worked just as well at about 1/10 the power needed.

An EU1000 will start and run a 5k btu AC. Get the cheapest unit you can find with a MECHANICAL (not digital) thermostat. As others have said, ecomode may need to be turned off. Suggest you run the unit for several days on utility power before you take it to the playa. Starting surge drops a bit after the compressor gets broken-in.

But +1000 to going evap.

FWIW: 5k btu wont keep a tent cool the minute the sun hits it.

Having owned several EU1000s before, I'd say sell it and get a 2000. Hell I think I even have an old EU1000 on a shelf in my garage I haven't touched in at least a decade.
They kinda suck. They just don't make enough power, for all sorts of things from A/Cs to big power tools and microwaves... whatever.
I disagree with the A/C vs. evap cooler sentiment. A/C wins hands-down, IF you have a big enough machine and enough power to run it.
If you're going to stay with the EU1000, evap is your best option.

Remember when pre-testing electrical loads that you will lose some power at playa altitude. You need some power to spare.

I bought this for my A/C at home. It's a cap the eases the hit your compressor makes on the power when it starts up. This particular one is for 220 volts but I bet they make one for 110 volts. Something like this could get your portable A/C unit to fire up without killing the little genny.

Remember the Playa is at 4000 feet and the genny loses efficiency with increasing altitude. Your genny may run your AC fine at lower elevations but have problems on the Playa.
