Internet, WiFi and Phone in 2017

Post by some seeing eye » Wed May 10, 2017 6:36 am

Not much changes from 2016.

First, if you really, really believe you need to be connected, bring a sat phone or a satellite dish distributed by WiFi for your camp.

If you bring any kind of WiFi - access points or devices, turn off 5 GHz and use the 2.4 Ghz. The 5GHz interferes with medical and other services. Turn off WiFi when you are not actively using it and WiFi autoconnect on your phones and GoPros.

If your art project needs a connection, contact the Artery.

Individual camp WiFi will be more congested than last year. Better at night than in the day. It will be unreliable (see satphone satdish above.)

Carriers set up temporary mobile phone base stations for the event to make money on roaming charges. They will be overloaded. Turn off automatic cloud photo upload, save photos on the phone rather than immediate FB/Insta, etc. You don't need to update your apps on playa for any reason and updating eats bandwidth.

The easiest way to control your demon phone is to put it into airplane mode for the week while using it to take photos/videos and notes, or power it down and store in a secure place. Label it with your name and contact info and obviously be sure it's backed up at home.

Turn off 5 ghz and use 2.4 ghz? Sense this makes not. Avoid 2.4 ghz at all costs. Simply a better WiFi spec and less crowded.

Hi Chef, welcome to ePlaya!

The organizers of Burning Man have specifically requested participants not use 5GHz. It interferes with all the infrastructure communication. That includes emergency services and medical services.

It's different than a city wired with DSL, cable and fiber Internet to every house. In a city your logic is correct - shorter distance and more bandwidth! On playa it creates a problem.

It actually makes allot of sense.

5GHz is used for the backhaul and distribution of signal. It has fewer channels but wider bandwidth.

2.4GHz is used for network access. It has more channels with narrower bandwidth.

Modern WiFi Mesh networks operate this way.

So, please turn off the 5GHz radio if your device supports it.
