Seattle Costume Shops

Post by MFOB » Mon Jan 26, 2015 8:12 am

Anyone know of a good place to get some fun stuff for TTITD in Seattle? Any cool or vintage or unique costume or clothing stores, leftovers from Plays, etc?

I live in Eastern WA, and the most I can find around here is old wine barrels and tumbleweeds.

Thanks

One place that comes to mind is "A Masquerade" in Bellevue. They have very high quality (and thus fairly expensive) costume items. There's also a place called "Pirate's Plunder' in downtown Seattle that has some fun stuff. Other than that most costume stores probably won't have what you're looking for for Burning Man items. Red Light is a good place to look.

Try a small dose of this. Cut an old suit jacket into a vest by cutting the sleeves off. Then sew, paint or staple something onto it. costume making is addictive. viewtopic.php?f=279&t=53078

Ratty. Good Ideas, I've looked before, but I'm about as handy with clothes as I am with 2 fingers and a high five.

BUT, I can build wood chains with one piece of wood, 10 foot replicas of The Man, erect a giant structure on Playa, so if I can just channel some of those skills and talent to some fun shit to wear, I should be all right.

Word!

Seriously, take Ratty's advice, all you need is a pair of scissors & an open mind. 8) Folks I work with actually believe that I pay big bucks for my cut-up cast-offs.

You can buy fabric-glue sticks for any glue gun. And if you can sculpt wood then clothing is not a big leap. Select colors and textures you like, and sculpt for comfort & utility in your chosen activities.

I am currently trying to make a coat from my discard pile, using old blue jeans on the outside (pockets!) and old tee shirts on the inside (cuddles), since, the thing I currently crave in BRC is a garment I can throw on over my naked body in the middle of the night to run to the JOTS: long enough to not need boots, short enough to keep out of puddles, easy on & off, pre-lit, with a carabiner for my water bottle...

Good luck to both of us, eh???

True that. Ill need some good luck. I learned to sew when I was just a grommet on my Moms sewing machine. Maybe I can figure that out again, shouldn't be too tough. Hot glue sounds ok. Ill try it out. it sounds way better than buying shit.

Fabric glue that goes in a glue gun?!? I'm going shopping today. Want and need it. That would be great for hats. Hey. Do you think I can attach fleece to my open vented windows on my tents with it?? I'm not looking forward to trying to sew them. Maybe I could hand stitch them on and then glue em down.

I wouldn't trust the glue vs 100 mph gale force wind that can last up to 72 hours (per The couch's recommendation).
You're better off finding a friend, gluing the fleece on, then sewing it as reinforcement. The 2nd person is on the outside of the tent, you're on the inside.

I'll pin it on the outside of the tent, baste it on real good with a curved needle and then glue it down. We'll see. That's my plan.

I just bought a Hot Glue Gun on the Zon and found fabric sticks for it. Like 4 bucks a pack.

Do like AntiM does, and use spring clamps from the hardware store. They are cheap and super handy to have a surplus of. :)

If you want to experiment with something else underneath that--stitches or glue--it can't hurt.

The word from the locals:

* For wigs/hats/accessories - Champion's Party Store
* Display & Costume (general costuming)
* Red Light (good vintage, neither super cheap nor super expensive)
* Goodwill Outlet (thrift sold literally by the pound)
* Salvation Army (SoDo neighborhood; near the stadium).

The (punk) Western style is popular and you may find ingredients locally. Make friends in the regional and then ask around for your size. Supplement on playa at the Black Rock Boutique. Search around your immediate area for a costume consultant - another burner. There is also a significant BC burner posse. You never know what American Apparel can pull out. There are also many etsy and other online sellers of custom. There should be some threads on that.

In addition to Captain Goddammit's suggestions, I've had good luck at some of the Value Villages in Seattle. The one on 11th in Capitol Hill gets interesting stuff but gets picked over quickly-the one in Ballard/Crown Hill on 15th Ave NW and 85th St is where I've actually found a lot.

I especially like to check out the housewares/fabric section-I've found multiple saris tucked away in there.
