Capes and Cloaks
So after a few years I have decided that for staying cool in the daytime that a metallic fabric cape or cloak is the ultimate accessory. A quick trip to the fabric store, 10 minutes of sewing and walla! Wind passes through easily, and you can turn it any direction you want to block the sun. It also looks epic in the wind.

Interesting. Post up a pic.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Re: Capes and Cloaks
I have a cloak make out of polar fleece that is one of my favourite night-time accessories. Keeps the heat in really nicely and can be used as a blanket.
I was thinking of making a daytime one as well, but I was considering a light silk. I'd be interested to know how the metallic fabric works.

Ya, I was wondering about a cloak.
I'm curious about details like the density of the fabric weave. Would loose weave muslin let too much sunlight through?
Has anyone found a cloak that is breezy and cool in the sun and also warm at night?

You probably won't see this, but for others who might:
It is best to have a day shield or day layer (like a cape, shemagh, or pashmina, to protect shoulders/back/chest), and a night layer (a full-on coat).
If you have the ability, it's wise to have an intermediate layer as well, like something the weight of a sweater or hoodie.
Why? . . . It's been at least as hot as 118F in . . . 2017 or 2018 (admittedly, a rarity) and the coldest I've ever felt there was about 38F (2010 or 2011).
More commonly the days are 80-90F and the night is 50-55F.
You need options!

Also nice to have a windbreaker type of garment for keeping out the cold. Capes and cloaks have traditionally been used for that, but the materials for that, but may not be something you want to haul around the playa.
It got really cold in 2015 I believe, down to near-freezing temps.

This might be a good idea. Has anyone else tried?silverfish wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2017 1:38 pmSo after a few years I have decided that for staying cool in the daytime that a metallic fabric cape or cloak is the ultimate accessory.
