I love it ratty,,very clever
Burning Man isn't about the stuff you see when you get there ....it's about the people that brought that stuff there

Thank you fishy!! Now I just need to become more organized.theCryptofishist wrote:I did buy one--to put on my wall at home. It's gorgeous, and even while $35 is a screaming deal, I'm too cheap to cut that apart for the playa. Plus with all the sequins on playa.
And it's backed.
But, Ratty, my first instinct was to let you know about this spectacular stuff in our back yard.
lazorfox, this is a page that gives you basic advise for starting one of these anywhere. (SCRAP is in San Francisco--across the bay--so it's not as near and dear to me, but I consider them also a worthy organization and I love being able to post this page.

Re: Start with what you have. It's easier and cheaper.
I love the fabrics of neckties. Small pieces of the best. This gladiator skirt took 22 ties. I only used the large half so I can make a second with the skinny ends. Or I can add them to this one for a larger sized tutu.
Measure from the large end. (I made each piece 20 inches). Cut. Fold them over the desired amount and sew. I also sewed the ends a little so they don't get unruly. I'll have to slip them on a stiffer belt. This one buckled under the weight. Last year I made one out of pieces and adorned it with gold stars. Buttons will do.

Nice, a use for ties that doesn't involve making a neck uncomfortable.
Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Last year at Lakes of Fire a friend was wearing a tie kilt and it looked so awesome in it's simplicity. What kills me is I see all these great ideas, yet space it off during winter working on them, when I should be creating.
And now, when I'm gearing up for a burn, I think about shit, and don't have near the time to be creative lol

i've been making lots of Playa wear from stuff that i already have (thrift store clothes, fabric scraps), and i want to upload pics on this thread to share with all of you...but i don't know how to upload pics to e playa
What is this quintessence of dust?
Re: Start with what you have. It's easier and cheaper.
Try setting up a free account at a place like flickr.com or photobucket.com, and follow their instructions to upload photos to one of those sites (there are other good sites out there, too). Those places will host the photos, and give you lines of code to share them here using BBCode.
You don't need to use your real name on those, even.

FoC: You can attach a pic to a post directly, too. I think there are limits to the size and number of pics, because they don't really want us using up all their bandwidth turning this into a photo-sharing site, but if you just want to share a few, here's how:
(1) Below the box where you type your posts is a blue box with two tabs. The left-hand tab, which is active by default, is called "Options" -- it has all the stuff like "Disable BBCode," "Disable Smilies," etc., with checkboxes beside them. The right-hand tab, which is inactive, is called "Upload attachment." Click on there.
(2)You'll now see some boxes to fill in under "Upload Attachment." You can type in a filename or (this is probably easier) click "Browse." After you've selected a file, click "Add the file."
(3) Now, the "Upload Attachment" tab will be inactive again. That's OK. Your picture has been attached! If you decide you don't want it in your post, just click on "Delete File," and it will be un-attached.
It took me way too long to find that stupid tab. For months, I thought uploading attachments was disabled on my account for some reason. (Ever heard of Ockham's Razor? Me neither, apparently. My M.O. is generally to jump to the most insane and elaborate conclusion possible).

Re: Start with what you have. It's easier and cheaper.
Last night, my partner was rummaging through drawers and found an extremely hideous mini-purse made out of brown vinyl/naugahyde, all "sewn" together with plastic craft cord through pre-fab holes. I have a vague memory of actually using that thing back in the 1990s. I probably bought it at a folk festival. Anyways, I discovered that everything about the purse was reversible -- the wrong side of the naugahyde was smooth black vinyl, and even the snaps were not riveted by attached in the manner of those old-school bendable paper fasteners. (The whole purse reeked of a pre-fab "craft" you buy for a 5-year-old at a toy store.)
So I undid all those cords, reversed all the pieces, and re-"sewed" it using a narrow black ribbon instead of craft cord. Where there had been a hideous (and unusably flat) pocket on the front flap, I sewed on a patch pocket I made out of black velvet. (The pocket doesn't actually look that great. It's bunchy and crooked. BUT it turns out to be exactly the right size to hold my flask! I took off the hideous strap, and where the holes from that are, I'll use large key-rings and carabiners to hang it from the holes in my belt. Huzzah! A large black belt-pouch!

My mom's sewing machine has a button hole thingy setting but it wouldnt want to work so had to do it just by using the normal foot and a strait stitch. Pain in my toosh! lol.
Thank you though! I tried it on when I got back home and the ribbon is a bit itchy so going to switch it out I think.

Wing it! lol
Ummm make them bigger then you need and make them in a Triangle (minus the top, in needs to be flat of course) If they are to big then just sew again and chop of the extra. It is "pinned" already for you sense you sewed it once already.
Making a triangle makes them "bell" when you sew the tube together.
The pair I just made are way to long. I did not have my shit kickers with my at my mom so I just eye balled it. Yeah to big.
Here is a wrap skirt I made a few months ago for BM out of found fabric. No pattern again. It bells out at the bottom.

Here is my tutu. ( and top hats, Glitter band not coming with of course!)Made this a while back to, Just forgot to post it. IT'S SO FLUFFY!!!
