Re: Costume & Crafting Help
Or use an existing swimsuit to make a pattern, if you can't find a color you like/want. Just make sure the stretch in the fabric is matched.

if you're worried about the mouth not holding its shape, you can make a faux cutout by filling in the mouth opening with flesh toned dance wear fabric. (that stuff you see on gymnasts and ice skater costumes.)

I think if you use a fairly heavy interfacing the teeth will stay put.

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
A few days ago I finished another project. I made my first scoodie for a friend and got a picture of her wearing it yesterday when I gave it to her. It's a continuation of the red panda outfits. She wanted a scoodie while I went with headband ears so I could wear my tail and ears during the day without getting overheated.

In addition to the open pockets for the hands I put an extra piece of fleece so that the front of the hand pockets are zippered pockets for storing things. Because POCKETS IN ALL THE THINGS! She's very happy with it, which makes me very happy with it. And onto the next sewing project!

I'm hoping to make some desert inspired garb next weekend, but I did just finish a no sew costume! My partner and I are going to have an all neon day, so i bought a bunch of neon clothes and accessories, and body paint. I'm yellow and he's orange.

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
For my desert garb I'm hoping for something along these lines, but with more colors sewn in along the edges to make it more playful.

Can anyone recommend a basic pattern to follow to get something similar?

Maybe something like this? http://kwiksew.mccall.com/k3209-product ... ge_id=3032

It has raglan sleeves, which are really easy to put in and won't need much in the way of changes to get a wider sleeve. Otherwise, I would just look in the sleepware section of pattern books if you go into a store to look for patterns.

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
thanks slvrnmph, super handy!
I'm newish to sewing, I played around on my mom's sewing machine for a few projects when I was a kid, but that was years ago. Now I have my own sewing machine (I keep meaning to sew some curtains), and I'm super excited to test out my serger too! Poor guys have been sitting in my closet for months.
Thank god for youtube, so much easier to watch someone do what you're trying to do than read about it then stare at the machine blankly

Burner buddy. Lay down on an old sheet and have someone draw an out line of your body. THEN Draw your ideal outfit outline. Make it a little bigger than you think it should be. THIS IS A COSTUME!! You don't need raglan sleeves and a bunch of fancy finished seams. (Unless you are spending big bucks on the fabric. Hell, make it from sheets and add trim. Done.

yes, have spent big bucks on the fabric. I want it to look nice, and it's an excuse to learn to use my equipment better. If I run out of time, my costumes will become capes and other easy make stuff

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
So I'm having an issue. Have 3 layers of soft tule and I have a tub about 2 inches wide. I need to put a one inch band of elastic threw it. I have done electic draw strings before but this one is giving me issues. Any ideas now to get it threw? This is my last thing to sew.

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
Make a giant "needle" from a coat hanger. Attach the elastic to the "eye" of the needle and then thread the "needle" through the fabric.

Big safety pin to the elastic and inch through.

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
OK. I have some sheer (really sheer) material that was once part of a belly dancers costume. It is cut into 6 pieces each about 2 1/2' x 5' I would like to sew them together to make a man's sarong but if I sew them all together I would have sarong about 15' x 5' and I can see that being wrapped around my middle about 5 times (34" waist) and I would probably feel like a roll of saran wrap in it. If i made 3 or 4 sarongs out of it I would most likely be labeled a shirtcocker.
Not my style.
So.... how should I combine (sew) these to have a flowing freedom of movement sarong that offers some modicum of modesty?

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
After looking for an industrial machine on Freecycle for years with no luck, it looks like I hit the mother lode of sewing machines.
Have been helping my wife move her business to a smaller location and while cleaning out a storage loft I came across 5 very old Singer sewing machines.
With industrial treadle tables! Although they seem to have been converted to motors, the treadle parts seem intact.
Post burn I will have to sort through them to see if I can get at least one working. Some may have been scavenged for parts.
Since the business dates to 1930, I assume these machines are at least that old. Thankfully, my father in law never disposed of them when he upgraded to more modern machines.

Drawing a blank, That could be a great find. I've seen quite a few treadles converted. Some of them are real workhorses.

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
Well I'm kinda tossed up - I really need a machine that can handle leather, but really want a treadle which would probably suck for leather. Since they have been motorized I'll probably stick with that and just make sure I have the means to convert it back in case of the zombie apocalypse. Post burn I'll check them out. I'll probably end up having her sewing machine guy come by and let us know which can be restored the easiest, then turn him loose on them.Ratty wrote:Drawing a blank, That could be a great find. Re: Costume & Crafting Help
I ended up getting slammed with work so I'm behind on my costuming, but I did figure out how to get my serger to produce a nice rolled hem yesterday! It took 3 hours to figure out how to thread it, and several pieces of fabric had to be sacrificed to get the tensioning right, but now I have a nice gold rolled hem on my cape
if anyone needs any help figuring out their brother 1034d serger I can point you to the youtube videos that helped me out

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
My serger is staring at me. Daring me to give it another try. NO. no, I'm not falling for that again. I found I could get it to work after much adjusting. then if I wanted to change fabrics it would be the same ordeal over again. I just ziz-zag and ignore that dust covered demon.

Re: Costume & Crafting Help
Well I sure have neglected this topic but since I'm pretty certain I'll be heading back to the Playa for 2014 I thought I'd give things a little push. It's never too early to start working on costumes especially since there are so many year-round events one can, and should, costume up for. So, any questions, sharing, comments about dressing up...bring 'em here!
