What about dermis? The lakebed has been sun-scorched, sand-blasted and uninhabitable by everything down to microbes for thousands of years now but I'm thinking with the rise in population, we should demand an official statement about the dermis question.

The Prepare for the Playa event this past Sunday in SF has numerous vendors with feathers. I did not go, but the facebook page had at least three different photos of feathered items, one stupid looking fan hat with branches and flowers that would blow off in a slight gust, and one "cargo trike" that had a giant dog carrier in the front to carry large hauls with only 12" front wheels. That bike looked like it would get stuck carrying a couple bags of ice, the fan hat would send a chick in orbit, and a bunch of fools wearing MOOP!!! Not what I would expect from an event that has the words PREPARE and PLAYA in it.

Oooh, many horrors indeed... but there are a few lovely pieces, like this upcycled bustle skirt which appears to have been made from a pair of pants plus many, many scraps of fabric.

OK.... ONE lovely piece. But there it is.

Cat- The girl who makes the upcycled skirts did post on the original thread in the fb group and was very nice and understanding. Her stuff is pretty cool and playa ready.

Bounce - The chick defending the feather vendors "Since feathers are not the only MOOP" is a Dancetrohottie herself. She is very much into LOVE and not into NEGATIVE VIBES. I don't know how long time burners can defend this stuff.

I find all the hippie talk about love and acceptance and "bad vibes bringin' us down" a little hard to take after a while. It makes them all sound so... spoiled.

fresh: Thanks. It's pretty clear from the pic that she's conscientious about MOOP. She's got all those frayable edges locked up tight. I agree with AntiM that people like her should be promoted as examples of doing it right.

Yeah, on those days when I feel okay about "burner" as a designation and my place in the burnerverse, I say that this is one of the differences between "burner" and "hippie". On other days I just say "we are so fcuking doomed."

I was at prepare for the playa this sunday and was pretty surprised by all the feathers. there was an announcement at one point about how feathers aren't playa-appropriate "even if you see them here." Miss G's headpieces are brilliant but mostly feathered; she had a sign proclaiming her feathered designs shouldn't be worn on the playa. I appreciated that. hers was the only one I saw, though.

holy crap though, some amazing creators out there. although the $200-$500 price tags on some of my favorite stuff will have me attacking my sewing machine with even more fervor.

Off topic, but was posted for this event for sale at $500 was this "cargo trike". Is it me or would the weight of any cargo on the small front tires cause misery for the peddler on any sort of sandy playa as the back tire would have no traction??? I could be wrong..

Pssst ... it is by no means a new test. (I know it is presumptuous, and I'm not trying to take away from Ratty, but it has been in my advice toolkit for years. Great minds and all that.... I also suggest hanging pieces out the window of your car at freeway speeds).

In the past feathers have gotten past the Gate team by one of the following "ploys":

Hiding it
Agreeing not to wear it at all on playa
Submitting the object/feathers to the yank-test to verify that they really won't come out

Gate volunteers are people, and only volunteers. They have to use their judgement, just like the people that packed these costumes in the first place. Sometimes that judgement is correct, some times it isn't and sometimes it may not be worth it to turn the entire vehicle around based on one feathered hat that cost hundreds of dollars. And sometimes they choose to be too harsh and go ahead and turn around burners that might have followed instructions to keep that hat in a bag the whole event.

But why have them make the call. Just leave your feathered items at home!

So here comes my 'Oh so silly' question. What about beads, sequins, glitter and unfinished edges on that home-made costume? Why all the hubub over feathers and not a peep about all the other offending elements? It's all moopish. Gate only cares about feathers? Is there something inherently evil about feathers that I don't know about? Just askin.

seems somewhere in the "required reading" it talks about sequins, glitter, and the like........I've seen it dis-allowed.
There has been discussion here regarding sequins.......seems consensus was if they are sewn on and super strong, no worries.......moop is moop.........
