RZ Mask vs. Respro

If you plan to wear a disposable mask that hooks behind your ears I suggest that you tie a string around the back. It will blow away in the first gust.

A question for all those who have used these masks: Is the mask itself essential to the filtration, or is it the filter that does the majority of the filtration?
I ask because the filters are much less expensive, and I like the idea of making my own mask-contraption and using their filters better. I don't really like the look of any of their masks, and I'm not a fan of the idea of neoprene on my face on the playa.

Hey, I think that's a great idea. I was introduced to 'Bluff' masks this year. They are no more than a sleeve you wear around your neck and pull up as needed. They would be much better used with a filter. So....A sleeve of T-Shirt material with a pocket for a filter sounds like my ideal dust mask. I would put velcro in the back because my big hair prevents anything from going over my head. (Except of course academic jokes and references to movies and TV.)

I've been looking at Keffiyehs, and they look very comfortable. I figure one of those with an rz filter tucked in would work wonders.
