Any daily-wear type costume should be comfy, cool dor day, warm for night, or able to be adjusted either way. Should be cheap enough to toss if the playa dust getss too much for it, and should not have feathers or beads or sparkllies that wll shed. My favorites have been heavily decorated bras with long panels of floaty cloth stitched to the bottom band and shoulders. My default comfy wear is a cotton yukata. I always take wigs and masks, and never wear them. My goth catheral length black wedding veil has been to the playa twice, and I have yet to wear it.

Just go with whoever/whatever you want to be and decide how much inconvenience and discomfort you're willing to put into your costume if it is elaborate. How often would you wear it? If it is a one time special then by all means, go all out. I love the Black Rock Lobster, but can't imagine how he moves in that amazing mass of metal and madness.

Whatever you wear, imagine wearing it in a wind-tunnel, and you have to go to the bathroom in a tiny plastic box. Add that you've enjoyed some intoxicants (whether you have or not, the Playa can do this to some).
Oh, and it's VERY dirty. Could be caked with mud in places.

Last year I wore a long "prairie" skirt made from unbleached muslin, a light shirt and a scarf to breathe through. Tens of thousands of women crossed the Great Plains in this kind of get-up. It works!

Body paints are great as they're easy to put on and great to keep you cooler during the day. A little chilly at night though.

There numerous costume designs available…. Do you plan to have multiple costumes? (evening and day wear) Do you plan on doing your own sewing? Do plan on joining a Theme camp? If so, what is their theme?

I recommend researching McCall, Vogue and Butterick patterns sites excellent source of ideas and information.

I'd like to throw in that you can be as imaginative and wild as possible. What you think is 'too far' while at home can suddenly seem plain and borning after 5 minutes on the playa.

Also, if you get there and start overflowing with ideas, stop by my camp and feel free to make over what you brought into your wildest dream. I'll be bringing a bunch of supplies to help with the playafication. I think I'll be listed as Streetwear Recycling Camp, but I'm not sure yet.

You might want to ask yourself these questions when designing a costume for the playa:

1. How will this costume breath in 110 degree heat? (day costume)
2. How warm will I be in 50 degree cold? (night costume)
3. How comfortable will I be walking several miles in this costume?
4. Can I ride my bike in this costume?
5. Can I sit down it?
6. Will it survive being exposed to a severe wind/dust storm?
7. Can I dance in it?
8. Can I negotiate a crowd in it?
9. Does it have pockets to keep my stuff, or will I need an accessory bag of some kind?
10. Will it create moop (i.e. stuff falling off it, making a mess).

Last year I brought two suitcases of costumes and ended up basically wearing two of them!
I wore a short neon pink slip with top hat during the day and a longer leopard slip with a piece of cloth as wrap/towel/blanket/headdress at night. So take that as you wish, but this year I'm pairing down on my costuming. I think pieces of fabric and safety pins are great!! and the decorated bras are great too.

Hats!

I learned after the first year that cool looking but unpractical shoes are just NOT worth it...even if you think you're just walking to the port-a-pots you'll get distrated and walk for "miles"! Think hiking when choosing playa shoes.

a decorated "sun-brella" is always a great accessory!

and if possible add pockets to EVERYTHING! you have to carry a bit of "survival gear" with you wherever you go and pockets are essential (as bags/backpacks can get separated from you, as I learned last year). Unfourtunately women's clothing/costumes often don't have pockets so adding them before you get there is always a good idea.
