Yak suits

Postby bm_cricket » Mon Jul 19, 2010 9:06 pm

Any ideas on where to buy large long pile fake fur? It's a project for next year. I want to make a couple of dozen fur suits for a little night time mob. Any ideas? Maybe it will be a project for another year. I figure that buying in bulk is the only really good way to do it.

Distinctive Fabrics carries it, but I don't think it gets that long.

Thanks! Some cool stuff there. I'm not really into fake fur personally but for this it may be worth it. (The fake fur+playa dust makes my skin crawl.. I don't know why)

Still, that's pretty cool looking It may be good for an art project but I may play around with making some kind of fabric out of knit yarn... Who knows.. All I know is that a bunch of yaks running around will be fun. :-)

I could live the rest of my life without ever seeing fake-fur again, and it bores me to tears on the playa- it looks like everyone shops at Burners-R-Us. However, they carry other great fabrics as well, so there's plenty for me to get ideas from.

Just for giggles I looked around for "Burning Man" clothes on online auction sites which shall not be named. All I found were fuzzy pink boots/fuzzy pink thongs/fuzzy pink tube tops. Or alternatively fuzzy purple over-sized jackets (For the guys). Great way to tell a raver from 1/4 of a mile away. ;-)

And to be perfectly honest I think that what I have in my mind is more like Chewwy.

Look for goat fur. It's comparable, for that longer, shaggy look.

Mill End Fabrics in Reno had some pretty long brown fur as of last week. Not quite Yak butt long, but about the same length as CFM's pic. I'm thinking it was over $20 something a yard.

Suits such as Chewy's may have been hand-woven.
You make a mesh fabric jumpsuit and get some "wool crepe".
Wet it, straighten it and let it dry, then hook it into the jumpsuit like a Persian carpet.

"mongolian" style fur is probably your best bet. it's about 3" long but it tends to be curly. it's about $25 a yard here.
frankly you probably have to go to L.A. and look around specialty stores for that kinda stuff exactly. It would be more like $50-$100 a yard.

Crepe hair for beard/wig building would be cheaper, but more time-consuming to make into a yak costume.

Could also try extensions/weaves, they'd have the seam line and you could layer them with glue or sewing.

Google ghillie suits. Not hair, but very creature-y.

You know, the more I think about it, the more I like it! I can imagine a herd of yaks grazing at a camp, and when one gets spooked, they all turn and go galloping off in unison to parts unknown. My kind of humor I suppose. Please count me in! Let me know how I can help (for next year?!)

Cool. That's not a bad idea. I'll keep this in mind for next year because as it stands I don't think I can afford that... On the bright side it's a lot cheaper than the "make it yourself" option I was formerly considering.

If it were me, and I wanted to make a whole yak costume similar to the pic you posted, I would buy up cow costumes and then trim with extensions for the shaggy look.

No, well, depends on budget. Brown sweat suits + hair, or make a fur body and then trim...or sew up an easyonoff suit and trim.

Headpieces would be easy, horns are cheap and/or easy to construct.

The original Wolfman makeup on Lon Chaney Jr. was done with Yak hair.

That's what the Tibetans use to make Yeti hair with too.

Individually they aren't that expensive. We have a desert khaki one, I want to wear it in Center Camp huddled down near pillows. Then when the hippie leans against me, I'd wrap my arms around him... hehehehe
