All right... I'll venture onto this thread (pun) with a question:
MyDearFriend shipped me a canvas bag made from a coffee bean sack, to use as a moop bag. It's the traditional coarse jute tan fabric. Seemed to me, this material, complete with Brazilian printing, would make a good Playa garment -- specially with the Cargo Cult theme. Then I realized the "hair shirt" qualities of the fabric against the skin. So now I'm wondering if anyone knows of a fabric with similar appearance but a skin-friendly surface? I can easily go to one of the fabric stores "in a big city" if it may exist there.

A lining! Why didn't I think of that! And I still remember how to use my sewing machine. Problem solved!

Dear sir, please be careful, those sacks make good burn bags because they are HIGHLY FLAMMABLE.

Re: Man Clothes
There is a similar genre of shirts / dress / towels / pillow cases using cotton or muslin sacks from flour which would be a lot more comfortable. Although you might be hard pressed to find those sacks now, at one time many flour manufacturers actually printed designs on their sacks to entice buyers (back when most households made their own clothes). I think it reached its peak during the great depression, but I've seen similar stuff in developing nations more recently.Elliot wrote:All right... I'll venture onto this thread (pun) with a question:

Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

Re: Man Clothes
Last year I borrowed a sarong from my wife during the day. It was so useful and comfy it was all I wore during the day for the last couple days straight. That, a camelback, and a wide brimmed hat. It's not fabulous, but damn it's efficient.

Dude, I am totally goping to buy a three-piece suit at a thrift store, and a top hat with goggles on it. It'll be trashed the first time I wear it, and it will only be good late at night when it cools down a little, but if you are gonna dress like a man GO ALL THE WAY and wear a black pinstriped suit and a top hat on the playa. Not in the heat, you'll die in a minute bring your Crocodile Dundee suit for that. Complete with a "that's not a knife, THIS IS A KNIFE" knife. Not actually sharp.Saguache wrote:My first burn was 2010 and I wasn't prepared with costumes or even anything that might actually hint at style. But I was impresses by what I saw and even made attempts to alter on the playa what I had so I could feel part of the crowd. One thing I did notice is that my sporty-utilitarian technical clothing (what I wear the other 52 weeks) didn't really fit in at all. Also, with the exception of a couple of cool LED suits at night and a few paired costumes I noticed that most males really didn't dress up as well as the women.
Youre rolling your eyes now I'm sure, but it's true. Women just seem to know what they're doing here. They've got both the garments and the skill to pull off something truely attractive and unique.
A lot of what BM is to me is finding situations where I know I'll be uncomfortable or out of my depth and diving in without testing the water. This year I want to dress up when I go out. I need some help to pull it off.

An unnamed burner who lives with me (can't possibly be the stallion cause he told me to stop telling stories about him) took the wire cage thing from the top of a champagne bottle (the one he bought to celebrate our ticket acquisition) and expanded it full so it was really big (does that make the story ok honey?) stuck it on the tip if his mr. I live in tutus during the day. I don't believe in Tutu Tuesday.
Let me count the ways...
1) It's hot, why wear anything else??
2) It is perfect for riding a bike. Other outfits get caught.
3) fun and goes with anything
4) and finally, when in my life can I ever wear a tutu without being the crazy lady in a tutu??

Re: Man Clothes
I have been drinking. I won't be able to erase this in the morning, but here's my story. When I was about 20 years old, 1974,, I was riding in my best friend's VW. We were in Chicago, coming home from a day of drinking at Foster Beach (it's on Lake Michigan). It's 90 something out, no AC in the VW. Our balls are sweating in our cutoff shorts in the stop-and-go, rush hour, city traffic. I said to him,"Do you know what I wish we could wear?". "What?", he said. " A sleeveless T-shirt long enough to cover our crotch.", I said. He looked at me, shocked,"You want to wear a dress?". "I guess I do", I replied. "That sounds like it might be a good idea.", my best friend admitted.
On my way to the playa, I plan to stop at a store and buy an XXL ladies dress. Maybe lame` or a leopard or zebra print. Looking forward to letting everything dangle. And I plan to get some fishnets. Always liked the way they looked.

Try Ross & TJ Maxx for flashy dresses at the last second, or shop online.
Fishnets are indeed fun. Note: they may give you interesting tan lines, and if you are athletic, have long legs, or an average or larger frame, buy at least one size bigger than you think you'll need. (I love plus-size stockings, even though I vary between a size 6 or 8.) If there are two sizes--regular & plus--I opt for plus. If there are a range of sizes (which the slightly pricier brands do) I try 1 or 2 sizes bigger than the chart recommends. This has never gone wrong for me, although your mileage may vary.
Skirts, kilts, utilikilts, and sarongs are other nice, airy possibilities.

Time to start planning.
Some ideas for other guys: Here are some of my go-to's that make me happy - though I'm interested in more good ideas out there.
Daytime:
- Black (tanned) leather shorts (lined, with pockets & belt loops. Found them on Etsy from eastern Europe for a great price. 3 years in and they're still my go-to for about 1/2 the burn);
- Leather (all) vest (again from Etsy)
- Solid-color corduroy cowboy shirt with fake ivory buttons, and sleeves removed. I'm super happy when it's super-dusty.
- Various hats, emphasis on cool (e.g. some kind of weave)
- Pink. Stuff.
- "Is it a kilt or a patterned knee-length women's skirt, or ...?" Dunno; but it's comfortable & makes me happy around camp.
- -- I keep considering buying a utility kilt. But, but, but ... I'm just not sure I want to join those ranks. The one above is more ... non-specific.
- And yes, I have a pair of gold lame tight shorts. I wear them daytime dancing. Sue me.
- Camo tights. (cheaper from women's dept. but look closely at crotch seams. Substantial seams can be ... tricky / irritating for guys. #learnedTheHardWay)
- Holographic leggings
- Long playa fur (festivaltradingco dot com are burners, and your friend here.)
- Non-woven hat. (I have shaved head; gotta stay warm)
So, *bump*. Anybody got any other good ideas?

Re: Man Clothes
For what shirt under the coat, what do you envision? Shorter, hip length, belly shirt, or something longer? A shift or minidress may do the trick, or look at womens yoga or belly dance wear. Sleeves or no sleeves? Warm or cool?

Re: Man Clothes
Good questions to ask to help me start narrowing the problem. I definitely dance all night at big music camps, so I guess I can start to attack this from a functional perspective as well as fashion:AntiM wrote:For what shirt under the coat, what do you envision? - Cool enough not to make me overly-sweat if worn under my fur
- Warm enough that it will keep the chill away when I inevitably take my fur off while dancing
- Maybe not show any tummy unless it's a regular shirt that is unbuttoned. I'm a man of a certain age, and that age has deprived me of my (never-had-it-really) 6-pack. I'm not super-overweight, but my tummy isn't something to highlight - or hide.
- Probably no sleeves. I don't care much for the interaction of sleeves inside the festival fur. And when the fur is off, dancing keeps me plenty warm.
Thanks for the thoughts!

Re: Man Clothes
Also look in thrift shops for short sleeveless dresses. Many make great long tank tops for men. MyLarry has several little skater dresses he got at Hot Topic on clearance. Perfect tops.
