Faux Fur fo real
Craftees,
I would like to sew up a nice FF suit this year, but just about soiled my jammies when I saw what the prices online were running! Where do you find good prices on the fakery, or can you suggest what I could look for to recycle into a smart frock?
Thank yuz.

Re: Faux Fur fo real
Someone on here mentioned a fur bedspread they brushed out and cut a vest or something out of in a different thread. I thought that was a great idea for cheap fur material.

Re: Faux Fur fo real
It may surprise you to learn that stuff's expensive. Even deal prices are spendy as hell (compared with non-furry fabrics). We generally buy stuff at wholesale, and $30+ per yard is not uncommon (wholesale prices have more than doubled in the last 4-5 years, not just for faux fur but on lots of materials). I rarely will buy a material like that online if I can avoid it (feel is important, and I have places I can shop in SF and LA), but if you do shop online make sure you order swatches first (even if they charge a nominal fee, it's worth the money IMO to know what you're getting before you commit to several yards. Distinctive Fabric doesn't specialize in fur, but they do usually have a pretty decent assortment of interesting stuff (furry and otherwise). They're burners and costumers (and all round good people), and have a pretty good eye for awesome stuff. Sign up for their list, as they'll occasionally do the discount thing.

Others have said that staying on top of Joann's coupons can work out.

Re: Faux Fur fo real
The down side of staying on top of Joann's coupons is that you end up with the crap that Joann Fabrics sells.
Real fur and hides can work, though in the case of real animal furs you run a greater risk of stuff falling apart. Let's face it, that thing is dead and the pelt may not keep that well over time.

I haven't found a fur, real or fake, that doesn't shed.

Re: Faux Fur fo real
I was given two pieces os this super soft faux fur. One is grey with black undertones and the other one is this sooooft, pretty shag-type stuff. Each piece is approx. 54"x68". I was thinking about making a nice skirt and/or vest with it. Any other suggestions?

Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.
Re: Faux Fur fo real
If one of them is a particularly good color on you, put it on your upper body near your face.
I'm going to make some voluminous hoods, I think; kinda medieval looking.

Re: Faux Fur fo real
maladroit - if you get a good faux fur and make something well, shedding is not an issue. When you're shopping for the material, check in the center of the roll to see if it's MOOPy. Hit it a couple times and run your fingers through it a bit, then do it again. It's almost certain to shed the first time, but good stuff won't the second time. Then make sure you cut it right and make sure the edges/seams get done right (how to sew with faux fur is a whole subject of its own, I imagine there are other threads as well as a number of pages and videos on the internet), and once the project's done (and before you get to the playa) give it a decent brushing with a suitable brush for the kind of fur you're using.
Looks like some great material, maryanimal!

A trick SmAshly learned for fake fur is to put it in the Dryer on low or no heat and let it tumble around for a while, before sewing. You'll be surprised how much fur ends up in the lent catcher.trilobyte wrote:maladroit - if you get a good faux fur and make something well, shedding is not an issue. My favorite part, is that when you're done sewing it doesn't look like a bunch of Furrys just hand an orgy!

Re: Faux Fur fo real
Also, when cutting faux (or any) fur, cut from the back side with a razor or by snipping just the weave of the fabric, doing your best to avoid cutting the fur fibers. Then clean the edges of any fur that accidentally got trimmed. It helps to seal the edges, too - serge/overlock stitching works really well if you have that kind of machine. I use lining and then bind the edges.
