Best places to shop for men's clothes in SF or Reno

Postby Beatwrangler » Mon Aug 18, 2014 4:25 am

Hi all - it's now looking like I'm going to have to get a warmish jacket for the Burn in SF or Reno. Ideally i'd like something that isn't exactly everyday wear obviously....

I know the best option is layers to keep warm and I have some which will probably do the trick most of the time - but i'm flying from the UK and i'm camping so i'm severely limited on space/weight. (I have a ride from SF to Reno so the weight thing is less of an issue then).

So - any suggestiond for good shops for me to scout in SF or Reno? I'll be arriving in SF on Friday (OHMYGOD IT'S NEARLY TIME!!!! \0/) abotu mid afternoon so won't have a huge amount of time to run around (will be staying by Union Square if that helps). Leave for Reno early the next day and arrive about midday saturday.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

The Melting Pot (s.virginia st)
Savers (there are 2)
Polyesthers (s,Virginia st)
Junkees (s.virginia st)

Google thrift stores...

Junkees, The Melting Pot and Polyesthers are all within easy walking distances of each other

Please do check out the fabulous
Community Thrift Shop
it is on Valencia Street and 17th in San Francisco
very likely you are going to be speaking with the burners there

On Mission St in SF you can hit Thrift Town (Mission at 17th) and Mission Thrift (Mission just south of 19th), plus there are plenty of little stores in between the two. Take the underground from Powell St to 16th/Mission, then head south on Mission.

Thrift Town tends to be a little more boring, Mission Thrift a little more picked over (they tend to have good Burner stuff, and all the Burners here know it). Community Thrift is just a few blocks away, but it is really hit-or-miss, mostly miss IMHE (I've found one cool piece of mens clothes there in 22 years...)

If you have more time, Haight Street has plenty of places to shop (from Divisadero to Golden Gate Park), but they do tend to have tourist prices.

(Some of the best potential playa jackets and clothes for Men are actually in the Ladies' section of the Thrift Stores). Don't be afraid to wander down those aisles--some of my best finds are from the Ladies' section.

Check out Distractions on Haight. A little pricey but some very cool stuff.

I love this place...........never fails to answer every query.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions folks - VERY much appreciated. I'm more than happy checking out (supposedly) women's clothes for decent jackets....the only issue is size usually - in women's sizes i'm pretty big!

Thank you again - I'll make sure and check these suggestions out :)

There is a Vintage Clothing Bazaar in Reno this weekend. 2221 Dickerson Road, Reno, Nevada. Tons of mens/womens vintage and warm stuff!

Good call Catman, that place is legit. I ran across it one year (months before the burn) and said, hmmm, this is nice.

Friendly and Burner owned

Lauren the owner of Prism has scaled back her store. She no longer carries costumes but more focused on her tie dye (she does awesome stuff) you can find awesome tie dye clothes there

Damn it, there was great funky clothes in there. I thought I walked into Kramer's closet, I was in heaven. Got some snazzy slacks and the GF had a field -day as well...

I don't know about Reno, but in SF...

A really great AFFORDABLE and unique costume resource are the Nomadic Nectar sales - Facebook.com/nomadicnectar They do a series of big sales in July and August in SF and East Bay each year that are full of fun costumes for men and women, both new and used! A *great* place to go if you don't have time to be making all your own costumes or scouring thrift stores.

Beyond The Fence has a couple of sales in July or August - a bunch of different playa designers - cool stuff, can be a little pricey for some things....

Five & Diamond on Valencia - cool - crazy expensive. But they do have a warehouse sale in August where stuff is a tiny bit cheaper?

My other classic favs (for men and women's costume pieces) are:

Scouring thrift stores on the edges of the Bay area for old vintage finds

New York Apparel on Haight St for lingerie/sexy stuff

Looking on Etsy for unique accessories like googles, hats, leggings...

And making your own - Fabric Outlet on Mission St is AMAZING for fabrics and notions

Cliffs on Castro is great for components to make things, as well as wigs and misc costume items!

:)
