Footwear

Post by DerbyDave 18 » Tue Jul 07, 2015 7:15 pm

I've been reading up on what type of footwear to bring. The one thing that didn't get mentioned much is sneakers. Will a good pair of sneakers be good as my main thing to wear? Are boots better? Sneakers just seem like theycd be easier and lighter on your feet.

asked and answered a million times! I'm glad you are excited, but there should be some amount of research you do on your own dear.

Bring a couple of different pairs of shoes that YOU find comfortable. Maybe a pair of slip one or sandals for early porta potty runs. I know your excited, that's cool, but use some common sense...

I can go barefoot out there with no problem. But those are MY feet....

Wear whatever you want, make sure to get lots of walking done starting now, preferably in the exact footwear you plan to use on the playa. If you're wearing shoes, buy some very thin synthetic liner socks and wear those under thicker socks. If your feet get sweaty, invest in a bottle of foot powder and use it every morning. These measures will all but eliminate the possibility of crippling blisters that will ruin your burn.

All the answers you need.

Your best google search format is: site:http://eplaya.burningman.org (space)(search term/s)
ie: site:http://eplaya.burningman.org shoes
That way you only get results from eplaya, not from all over the web

Tamarkay..excuse me for asking questions but I kind of thought that was what discussion boards were for. And just so you know I have been reading and searching and googling my ass off. Sorry if I missed something that was asked a million times but I guess I'm a big old failure from what you're making it seem. Jeez, lighten up.

DerbyDave - click the link I posted above & you'll see why some of the "old timers" on the board get frustrated with some questions - it's been asked a lot. A lot a lot.
Everyone here is here because we want to be, and we love helping out with questions, but sometimes it gets hard to be helpful when a question has been asked hundreds of times before. This isn't personal towards you, it's something that happens to anyone asking a question that's been answered what feels like a million times (see: anyone mentioning the word "DJ")

Using my easy-peasy eplaya search format on google can help you quickly discover if a subject you're curious about has been covered, and give you threads to dive into if it has (most of the basic information doesn't really change - like tents, shade, clothing, dust-masks, etc, so threads from a few years ago are still good). Use a couple of terms to try to narrow your posts down, but it's like google-magic in doing research.

Again, the format is this: site:http://eplaya.burningman.org(space)(search term/s) - get rid of the ( ), and insert what you need to find:
site:http://eplaya.burningman.org shade structures
site:http://eplaya.burningman.org "coconut water"
site:http://eplaya.burningman.org playa AND chicken

italics not necessary, of course. :D

Believe it or not I'm one of the nice ones lol

If it was just a question or two it would be different. But you have asked several of the really simple ones to find answers too. Makes me really worry about the rest of your setup.

Tamarkay, I really don't care if you think I'm not good enough or ready for this or will be able to handle the experience. Your approval means nothing to me. In the old days I would have gotten all hurt and given up because of people like you but I'm not into that anymore. If I'm such a bother you can just ignore my posts and we'll both be happy. I was told that old timers can be disagreeable and unpleasant and I'm seeing that in many cases that appears to be true. I appreciate the people who showed me me ways I didn't know to find information. I'm expecting people will get on me about having a bad attitude so go right ahead. Thank you to all who have helped. The rest of you..whatever.

Cool your jets DerbyDave. Tamarakay really IS one of the nice ones here. She's trying to gently help and nudge you to be self reliant. And trust me, we all need nudging. Which is what this site is for. Nudging. Not spoon feeding. Nudging.

DerbyDave:

TamaraKay is one of the helpers on this board
she's definitely not judgy/snarky/mean.

I think that she is expressing concern (as have others), that you might need to 'toughen up' and radically exercise your self-reliance in order to get the most out of your playa experience.
We might be crusty, but we honestly want everyone to be prepared so as not to be a drain on the community.
Different styles of crusty, cuz we are all vastly different people with one thing in common: Love for the dust. 8)

Continue with your 'dorky, obsessive' searching for info (we've all been there!),
and try to take the internets more lightly on your skin.

It's flat Terrain, and you'll be on your feet a lot. What would you wear for a concrete convention center?

I tell you guys, to outsiders which I more or less am you guys version of caring is real hard to recognize. I get the whole tough love thing but in my case it always got the opposite reaction in that it pissed me off. I will manage to get to this, get through it and I'm pretty sure have a great time despite the fact that I'm pretty much a city slicker with no experience in this sort of thing..ever. That's why I'm asking so many questions and I have been reading posts and doing searches and googling my brains out every day. If that's not good enough for you people because for whatever reason I missed something that has been discussed there's nothing I can do about it. I guess this is a lesson in the whole radical self reliance idea I've read about here because that's what I plan on doing from now on. Relying on myself, not you people. You all have a good day.

Oh geez. Ok. One of the best things you could do in my opinion is to not take this so seriously. You've gotten a ton of help here on eplaya with really very little snark. Just roll with the punches, snark back and you'll be fine. Really. It may seem like you're being ganged up on but hell brush it off, stick around and come meet some of us at the meet and greet.
