The first time I went backpacking, I forgot my spoon and did very well with a set of hand carved manzanita chopsticks. I think I still have them somewhere. A great lesson in self reliance.
these come in several colors, were clearancing last year, and I got a few from Sierra trading post. about 6 inches long. Spork snaps into spatula/knife. made by guyot designs, a company that makes some very cool things. I also have their nalgene screw top lantern.

I've come across some things I didn't want to put in my bag... or even touch with my hand... and then have found myself collecting oodles of moop regardless and wishing I had a bag to put it in. Granted, this is usually deep playa at dawn. I keep a bag with me now!Shambala wrote:
No need to bring the bag for moop. I have never found enough to put in a bag. The odd wrapper or paper can just be put in a pocket in your backpack and dumped later.
This year I plan to carry my goods in a fanny pack / utility belt that has two water bottle holders and a bunch of pods I've attached to it (works splendidly, but unfortunately was from Walmart) and maybe this thigh holster-ish bag: http://www.grabitpack.com/shop.htm .
I'll have something along the lines of:
2 water bottles
a clip on big water bottle full of / to fill will alcoholic yums
a flask
snacks
1st aid kit
tp
emergen-c
Gerber (multi-purpose tool)
mask
sunscreen
hand sanitizer
small bag of baby wipes or alternative if I make it
trash bag and glove, just in case
kazoos / homemade journals / various gifts
notebook, pen + marker
camera
mini video camera + mini tripod
headlamp, goggles, kercheif (if i'm not already wearing them)
extra carabiners
lid for beer cans!
cigaroos + lighter
{and sometimes/maybe...}
arm warmers
h20 mister.... ahhh....
poi
eyeliner pencil (these have many purposes...)
compact
spirit gum
shiny face disco
a spork
If I'll be out late, I'll grab extra clothes (jacket, fresh socks in bag, etc.), some kind of light like re-usable glowsticks and el wire, more kazoos, and drinks and put em in my bike basket.
It might seem like a lot of stuff, but I try and go small with each bit and it's all useful for me (and others!). I'm probably forgetting something, but that's about it.

more stuff
this is a great thread; thanks!
i would definitely add (and some don't need to): emergency tampons!
other than that--whatever piece of clothing i need to turn day wear into night wear, in case i don't want to go all the way "home" to change.
gifting stuff
that one chocolate mushroom that's been sitting in my freezer since dirt

I try to put items in my pack for both night and day. It saves me time in the evenings trying to find everything in near-dark.
I always always always cary spare tp.
I found out recently that those stainless steel bottles with the clip on them hold 375 ml (i.e. one bottle of wine). Last year I was filling the bottle from a bag-o-wine and didn't realize how much it really was.
I also have spare safety pins pinned inside my bag. Helps with temporary fixes to straps, holes, etc.
I also have the basics (goggles, mask, etc.) but everybody else covered those...

I think this year, in the spirit of positive thinking, I'll carry extra glasses and contacts in my bag, in case I don't make it home one night.
Now I just have to get some. Maybe some nice BCGs!

You don't have to be skinny, naked and under 30 to be a Hottie!

THIS IS WHERE I POST IN LARGE, BOLD, CAPITAL LETTERS.
ANYTHING THAT'S IN YOUR BACKPACK THAT YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE, PUT A RETURN ADDRESS LABEL ON IT. EACH YEAR, DOZENS OF CAMERAS ARE LOST, AND REUNITING THEM WITH THEIR OWNERS WOULD BE MUCH EASIER IF THE NAME WERE ON THEM! PEOPLE WANT TO BE HELPFUL AND GET YOU BACK YOUR STUFF, SO PUT A LABEL ON ALL YOUR SHIT THAT YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE!

I now return to my regular typeface, already in progress!
