Body Paint Questions

Post by intrepidkitten » Mon Jan 24, 2005 9:01 pm

Q: this'll be my first year on the playa, and i am wondering how(or if) folks who utilize body paint in their costume get it off? i am not afraid of dust and dirt, but wondering if i go, say, red and gold on thursday will i still be dealing with it on saturday?

Q2: where can i find good body paint?

Do a search on "Body paint" in this board, because I know weve talked about this.

good body paint
Use Kryolan Aquacolor if can afford it. If you're going to use an airbrush for application, use a good one--not one of the cheap knock-offs.
where can i find
Google on Kryolan Aquacolor and you'll find tons of it.

Types of Body Paint you'll probably find on the playa

Hi Kitten,
Q: this'll be my first year on the playa, and i am wondering how(or if) folks who utilize body paint in their costume get it off? i am not afraid of dust and dirt, but wondering if i go, say, red and gold on thursday will i still be dealing with it on saturday?
For the past two years I've instigated the Black Rock Body Art Guild. These are some of the things I've found.

First, you generally only find a few types of coloration out there.
Food Coloring Dyes - These are usually offered by Sporosite, (our across the street neighbors last year).
This stuff is sprayed on using a garden pump sprayer. Its a dye, so it lasts a few days. Generally 2 to 3. It wears off, give it time.

Body Paints - Airbrush or Paintbrush.
Most of these are water based. As such, you get them wet, they wash off.
Some are temp tattoo inks. These will stay on up to a week. They do wash off with either alcohol or baby oil.

Occasionally you'll find some powdered paints. These are rare, expensive, and give good coverage for a few days.

And then there's Henna. With proper care, can last a month.

Depends what you mean by GOOD ??

First - Make sure it's for Body Painting. Folks somethings use T-shirt paint, and other paint that ain't exactly known safe for painting on the skin.

Second question is how are you going to apply it ?
AirBrush or Paint Brush ??
How long do you want it to last ? How much rubbing does it have to hold up to ?
Water and sweat resistance ??
What level of detail, (one solid color or thousands of small flowers) ??

Paint Brush paint is cheaper than Airbrush paint.
We've tried a bunch of different brands and types.
Kryolan, Ben Nye, and Silly Farm works great with paint brushes.
For Airbrush:
Krylon Airstream is great but $10 and oz.
Graftobian is great, and resists water too, but it's pretty expensive too.
We found the Australian Body Art Temp Tattoo stuff pretty good, and less expensive too.
FX liquid paint worked well on some colors, but not others.

Send me a direct Email if you want to know more. Or if you'd like to join us and paint a few folks when you are out on the playa.
