Body Art Questions
I'm looking for a good body art makeup/ink. Something good for face painting that is good quality, doesn't smudge too much, but can wash off. Can anyone educate me on this stuff? Where to go, what types to buy.
Also, at last years burn I saw a guy with some black tatoo type art on him, and he said some guy did it for him with some special inking pen. Anyone know what this might have been.
TIA!

Who knows what that guy had, but take a look at these sites:

On the henna front (the hennapage.com is the best resource BTW!) - there is black body paint that can simulate tattoos and washes off. but if someone tries to sell/give you black henna saying the stain will last a week or more, get out of there. black henna has chemicals which can cause severe reactions and scarring.
just a public service announcement.

After looking through all of Phil's links, online searches, and my local bookstores I can't find what I'm looking for. What I want is a basic book on cosmetics, either regular or perhaps theatrical makeup that would help me enhance a couple of costume ideas I've got in mind. I don't know the first thing about makeup so I need something that starts from scratch and works up. So if anyone has recommendations, post 'em here, PM me...but almost any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Body Art Questions
Elemental666 has a good idea …
I'm not an expert by any means but seems to me the best place to get the "basics" would be to speak to an attractive female who's makeup is barely noticable. that chick will have some serious skillz...
But if you are not comfortable with that … have you tried asking a female relative? My Mom taught my sisters and I … and my youngest sister has mad skills she might be able to give you some pointers … she helped out when my nieces performed on stage … the dance studio sent home a sheet with instruction on how to apply the make-up they used terms I had no clue about … I called up the little sis and she walked me through step by step … we ended up help out all the other Moms at the show it was great!! Anyway just a thought … ask your Mom or sister

I majored in speech-drama, and our make up course used Stage Makeup by Richard Corson. See if any college bookstores have used copies -- it's now out of print. Also check amazon. What I want is a basic book on cosmetics, either regular or perhaps theatrical makeup that would help me enhance a couple of costume ideas I've got in mind. See

for links to other books on stage makeup. I'm sorry to say I'm not familiar with any other than Corson's text. Go to a bookstore and leaf through them to see if any speak to your needs.
Although there are several suggestions that you ask people who do a good job of 'street makeup,' I think you'll need a good stage makeup book to get where you seem to be headed. There's really no connection between street makeup and theatrical makeup, as you seem to know already.
The site I've linked to above sells theatrical makeup, as do the following sites:

Damned great book. I thought I was going to be the next Dick Smith or Tom Savini at one point, and carried that book everywhere. I think it fell into one of my Junk Vortices during one of my Major Life Upheavals.phil wrote:I majored in speech-drama, and our make up course used Stage Makeup by Richard Corson. Unless you resist spoiling the surprise, tell us your costume ideas and you'll get back suggestions tenfold almost instantly.

Phil, that book appears to be just what I was looking for and what 3 different bookstores had no clue about. I don't want to ask my mother and sister for tips...my mother doesn't wear much makeup and Tiffany's makeup...unless you like the Hot Topic look don't go there.
I've got a couple of different ideas, there's a drag contest on the playa I was interested in, and then there's another idea that I am still finalizing that requires really good makeup. As in subtle stuff....eye highlighting, skin tone matching stuff which is where I struggle. So it's a mix of both extremes. I know that doesn't help much but the ideas are still coming together. Normally I get a very impatient someone to put it on for me but I won't have the luxury of that on the playa so it's time to learn it myself.
(And I'm finding out it's not as easy as it looks!)

I realize this post was over a year ago, but I thought I'd ask if Kinetic had any luck with doing makeup on the playa - I want to do face painting/body art this year, and am looking for resources, hints and tips. Thank you!Kinetic IV wrote:Phil, that book appears to be just what I was looking for ....

I was in a college stage play back in the '70's. We used inexpensive dry Tempura paint mixed in water in mayo jars and applied with sponges. I played a Greek soldier who had a dark tan.
This body paint lasted 3-4 hours each performance, but we washed it off daily. If I was to use it on playa I'd mix a little veggie oil in to make it more pliable, since it tends to flake off when dried out. Cold cream is used for removal of oil based makeup, like clown whiteface or halloween makeup (which is on sale now)... I can see how gray ghost makeup can be shaded to make a nice robot or android effect.
I have an old Darth Vader mask sans helmet I'm going to adapt for my robot persona...I'm looking for pieces now to make my armor/body/suit but it will be more urban than a "HALO" battle suit. I might just wear a black trenchcoat and fedora and go as a robot mafioso.
