How big is each unit of ice sold by Arctica?

Post by krrk » Sun Jul 24, 2022 10:58 am

Hi! I’m solo camping this year for the first time (it’s my second burn) and I’m thinking of bringing a cooler to hold ice. How much ice can you buy at a time? I want to make sure the cooler I get is big enough.

I think you can pretty much buy all of the ice you have $ for, getting it back to camp without much melting or falling off in the dirt on the way back is another story...
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

A couple of tips on that. 1. Bring some large, 2.5 gallon zip lock bags. Put the ice in the zip lock bag. This will keep it from becoming contaminated by everyone putting their hands in it. 2. Use the melted ice...it is water after all. 3. Don't buy more ice than you need. Unless you have a very high efficiency cooler, it will melt in a couple of days. 4. If you can, get a high efficiency cooler. 5. Make sure you have a way to carry the ice (preferably in a cooler) so you can get enough without it melting.

They've changed it up this year.

I think it is 16 lb bags and 7 lb blocks.

I'm not sure though.

Bueller?

Also, get a sturdy cooler with wheels for the transport.

These lil fellas are dreamy for ice runs.

The new handle with the hitch pins are a breeze to rig to a bike.

Playa tested.

If you are Pacific coastal, be sure to let air out before you hit the passes so then tires don’t pop.

I use the thing every day on the ranch for all kinds of loads.

BTW, you really need a minimum of 2 good coolers, three is even better.

One cooler that has things you get once a day and has 100% frozen stuff, like your pre-made meals.

One cooler where you keep stuff that shouldn’t get wet but needs to be refrigerated, like produce, breads, chocolates etc.

One cooler that gets used many times a day, drinks, whatever you transferred from the frozen cooler last night, etc.

A big round Igloo type to mix in electrolyte water of choice (I love emergen-C) is always a good idea.

Always keep all cooler off the ground, in the shade.

I have 2 coolers and like Token says: I keep 'em on a wooden pallet and under a table and cloth, in the shade. (Now everyone knows how to get at my champagne!)

Two blocks and a chopped bag can easily fit in an average cooler; it kind of depends on how much stuff you have. If in doubt, get an extra.

If you buy too much, walk next door and give a bag to your neighbor. Instant friendship.
