AC Suggestion?
I was going to build a swamp cooler for my Shiftpod but if I am bringing a genny anyway, why not just use an AC.
Can I run one of a Honda eu2200i? If so, any suggestions?

The biggest reason to my mind to NOT bring a generator is the noise. Even a Honda.BaudEByter wrote:I was going to build a swamp cooler for my Shiftpod but if I am bringing a genny anyway, why not just use an AC.

That said, a ballpark figure for current draw from an AC is 1 amp per 1000 BTU for running current. Starting current- the current needed to overcome friction and inertia on an electric motor is up to 200% of running current. A better conservative figure for a new AC is probably 150%.
A generator needs to be derated for altitude and fuel. Check your manual. A guesstimate for a 2 kw generator at Burning Man is 1.8 kw. Derate further if you use propane.
There are reccomendations to add a start capacitor to reduce starting current on an AC. The two new AC's I took apart last year had a start cap from the factory. YMMV.

Did you end up coming up with anything on this? It's looking like we may be picking up a shiftpod soon to try and simplify things for our camp. Thanks!BaudEByter wrote: ↑Sun May 06, 2018 7:53 amI was going to build a swamp cooler for my Shiftpod but if I am bringing a genny anyway, why not just use an AC.

I use a 12,000 BTU AC for my Shift Pod.
We also make a buried power grid with a central whisperwatt diesel generator and spider box distro.

Re: AC Suggestion?
I picked up a Honda 2200 last week. It's a great little machine.
OT, but with no other load, it starts and runs the 13,500 AC (with hard start cap) in my trailer here at my home @4600' elevation.
It sputters a bit at start and my kill-a-watt meter says it's drawing ~2100 watts for a brief moment, but the fact that it runs at all was a pleasant surprise.
I just had it at Lake Tahoe for the week and it ran the AC @6300', thought sometimes it took two tries.
Playa elevation is right at 4000'

Re: AC Suggestion?
It's the Supco SPP6 . $10.00
From what I can gather, older AC's have them as standard equipment.
When I tried AC in my new trailer (2014) with my faithful Yamaha 2400, it wouldn't run, and I realized that the start caps ware now "optional". Installation takes about 15 minutes.
YMMV. I did NOT expect it to run. Anecdotal evidence says it shouldn't. Maybe I should go look and make sure it's a 13,500.
Edit: Yes. It's a Dometic B57915. 13,500 BTU
Re: AC Suggestion?
It is rated 12.4A steady state. ~ 1500W
Locked Rotor is 68A ~ 8KW
Impressive that the cap alone can overcome that millisecond surge.
I’d bring a spare cap or two and keep it in the fridge.

Still, far out IMO. Good craft buddy.
Re: AC Suggestion?
BTW, since your generator can provide the juice in steady state at the 4K elevation, if it ever gets dicey, you can always add capacitors in parallel...
Or you can experiment with adding a second SPP6, as they are so fricking cheap, in parallel. I’m betting both controllers will detect the surge even at half current and kick in the juice.
Be it 68A or 34A —> I’m betting 2 is better than 1.
Now, the hard start gizmos do have a controller so may have to get the Dometic controller separate and add caps ...When capacitors are connected in parallel, the total capacitance is the sum of the individual capacitors' capacitances. If two or more capacitors are connected in parallel, the overall effect is that of a single equivalent capacitor having the sum total of the plate areas of the individual capacitors.

I picked up s Whynter Elite ARC 122ds x 12,000 BTU. Only 9amp 1000 Watt and it’s dual hose(you need dual for a Shiftpod)Dsm253 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 12, 2018 8:59 amDid you end up coming up with anything on this?
