Smaller Misting System: Pump or Bucket Top?
Smaller Misting System: Pump or Bucket Top?
Hi all,
I am looking to run a smaller misting system. The 500+ psi pumps are a bit out of my price range so I am wondering if a smaller 100 psi one will work (with 4 nozzles) or get one of those bucket top fans from HD. Any thoughts?

There was a bucket top fan at Hookers and Makers? You know, vulture Chow and Grai Dogs Cop bar.

I do know them! They are basically neighbors. Will text them now.

The small 180PSI pumps from Orbit and the likes do work.
The problem is you have relatively high water consumption and little choice in nozzle size.
.012” nozzles will be 1 to 1.5 GPH each with a 150 PSI.
If you add a fan then the physics change a bit but you can direct the cool rather than rely on gravity.

Thanks Token!
Re: Smaller Misting System: Pump or Bucket Top?
Misting on the playa is pretty special. I even like a simple hand-pump, on me, or in the air and let the chilled mist drift back on me or walk through it.
Without knowing if you want to cool a large space, or just provide a smaller area of some relief or a treat, note that some people have taken their swampcooler out and about to give people a treat of cool moist air. Not quite the misting treat, but a lot less power required. And depending on the number of nozzles you'd use, a lot less water use. So depending on what you're intending, a swampcooler may be an alternative.

Re: Smaller Misting System: Pump or Bucket Top?
We've had several of the Arctic Cove bucket-top misting fans going in the waiting area at Astral the past couple of years. May be worth keeping an eye on ebay for them - several of us picked ours up for $35 apiece (though granted, that was in February).
They're only going to really cool things in the direct line of their spray (so maybe 8-10 square feet), but they seemed to be reliable and and were nice to have around, especially in open spaces where a swamp cooler wouldn't work. If you're cooling an enclosed space, though, I'd say the swamp cooler/AC unit are probably better options.
They run on Ryobi One+ batteries - I'm not sure what amp-hour rating ours had, but they lasted about 3-4 hours and went through a gallon or so of water an hour.

I had terrible luck with bilge pumps:, shoreline, attwood, rule, any of the little 12v canister-style pumps---they all crapped out as soon as I got to Reno, it seems. Avoid.

And yet, that's exactly where some have used them.
There's certainly no shortage of hot dry air.

Even with the cooler I made for the playapod, I still brought the bucket for sitting in the shade on hot afternoons and offering passersby a cool down.

I didn't even think about using the swamp cooler outside of my tent. Maybe I'll make another one that vents out about chair level. I'd be nice to just sit in front of that thing for a few. Everyone can use their own water.

Good point. And now that I think about it, *I've* used my box cooler in exactly that fashion during camp strike.
Sigh. Some days the neurons just aren't firing, I guess.
