The Temple of Juno: 2012
"Official" announcement out that David Best will indeed be designing this year's temple entitled the "Temple of Juno".
Can't wait to see renderings.. last years Temple of Transition leaves some big shoes to fill, but if anyone can do it.. DB can..

cant wait?
its on his website. http://www.templecrew.org (website has been slow for a few days)
looks like what is close to a traditional japanese style temple surrounded by a walled enclosure.

This and that origami crane... it's going to be another Japanese year!
Re: The Temple of Juno: 2012
i think the walled enclosure is gonna be cool to separate the temple area from other playa stuff
if you experienced it in the past one of the more interesting art projects out there that comes to mind in terms of that enclosure was the SAPPHIRE PORTAL

it was quite good at, for a tiny time....taking you outside of the playa in terms of seeing all the stuff driving past.. all you had was the sky..
will be interesting to see how the wall makes this space 'feel'
as it says on the website:
The temple's large enclosed exterior space, along with its interior structure and altar space is intended to address the needs of our community, to reflect and meditate in private.

WOW!!!
That is drastically different than what I expected though. I thought it would have a mayan architectural reference, for obvious reasons

The
has me wondering if it's supposed to keep large art cars from pouring sound on the temple, pissing off those who are there to reflect and mourn. Also, how is this going to effect the burn?...is intended to address the needs of our community, to reflect and meditate in private.

Re: The Temple of Juno: 2012
Quite possibly, Fishy. When I did events at the temple we worked with the temple crew and the guardians to keep a respectful distance. In 2007 a miscommunication between one of the vehicle drivers and the temple crew put one of the cars closer to the temple than either David or I would have liked. Not sure if that was in his head when he designed it, he may have simply wanted to have some break from the wind or more wall space for people to write their messages.

Re: The Temple of Juno: 2012
Wonderful. Lemur, that sapphire portal looks fun. One year my camp buddy had made a hexagon plywood enclosure with no ceiling that he decorated and it said, "See the Stars!" like an old tyme circus sign. You went in and BOOM there were the stars! No playa riff raff to distract them! I always wondered if there was a bigger version of something like that out there. It was cool to see that pic, and to see this temple rendering.
Fitting to do something new and unique, the burn will be a new experience unless they take the wall away before they burn it....but something tells me that has got to burn, too!
So lovely.

I didn't think about the wall vs the burning part of it.. hm. Interesting..

Or design the wall to burn quickly first, then shortly thereafter the Temple...hmmm...

That would block the viewing though.. I would imagine it being the other way around.. make the temple go up.. wait a little.. and then light the wall in a sequential chase type pattern. That would be pretty cool, really..

Re: The Temple of Juno: 2012
I would be most hopeful to see the wall burn first, and maybe follow a "path" of some kind to the Temple and catch it on fire. That might be cool. Well, whatever happens, there's going to be a reason and a design as to what burns first.
Oh, the suspense.

Re: The Temple of Juno: 2012
this temple does look massively cool.
however
I am increasingly annoyed that people seem tothink the only way to make something spiritual it must have soem kind of eastern connection are we in the west incapable of producing something that speaks to us on a spiritual level without it being an oriental design?
ok i just thought about that a little and the man is pretty potent western (celtic) religious symbol so forget i posted this
move along now its just me mutterring to myself
