The Starlight Project
The Starlight Project
Starlight - is a modest sculpture installation for Burning Man 2012. Seven twelve foot diameter icosahedron plywood stars will be placed on the playa mapping out the constellation Orion creating a "heaven on earth" effect. Ideally participants would own their own star. the starlights could be claimed, built and managed by multiple groups/individuals one per star or more? The stars could then be adorned, sheathed, painted, papier mache'd etc..to reflect the whim and individuality of the owner.

The basics:
My last serious offering was the Helix Spire in 2010.
I'm based in Seattle.
I am looking for help from people who are genuinely interested in producing art work. Builders, woodworkers, electricians, graffiti artists, painters etc...
The prototype light will be built in coming weeks.
The prototype light will be displayed at Critical Massivein July.
Plywood patterns will be cut by cnc router.
Materials include 1/4" marine plywood and simple plumbing pipe.
Current rough estimated cost per star is $650+/-
No I don't currently have funding but I have run the Kickstarter gauntlet before.
Shipping appears to be dealt with.
Yes I have tickets.
Yes I missed you last year Ugly Dougly, Token, and Bucky. Maybe this year?
Facebook page = Starlight
Yes I've probably left some critical piece of information out. Feel free to ask questions. I'll update this thread as need be.
Cheers - remash

Looks awesome! You may also want to post your human/participant needs in the Art Projects Seeking Participants thread, be sure to specify where you're based.

Re: The Starlight Project
Well, it's getting real. Here are some of the cutouts for the test star from this past weekend. More to follow including the inevitable "kicksarter" plea
. With any luck we'll have one of the stars constructed by the end of next weekend. Stay tuned or follow us on our fbook page. Cheers.

Re: The Starlight Project
On other fronts we've decided to go with different but similar families of graphics for each star. Each star will also get a colorful paint-stain. Stars will be colored by type ie. red for red giant, blue for blue giant, purple for ultraviolet etc.....stars will be labeled by name as well.
Betelgeuse - red super giant
Bellatrix - blue giant
Saiph - ultraviolet
Rigel - blue super giant
Alnitak - blue super giant
Alnilam - blue super giant
Mintaka - blue giant
Here is a test model of the pattern we just cut as well as a few of the other patterns considering, more to follow.

Now "live" on Kickstarter w/ an updated promo vid (that won't post here for some reason?)
Re: The Starlight Project
This certainly is one of my favorite projects!
If I had $400 to spare, I would love to get Betelgeuse and install it in the backyard. Sigh...

Excerpts from a note we received on our kickstarter page:
Hey UFG, Doug, Peach Pancakes etc......
Afraid I have no idea what you're asking, it's damn entertaining though
Thanks so much UFG,
Looking forward to more.

Ultraflashgun wrote:Hey man, UltraFlashGun.Tumblr.com @Ultraflashgun here. I had an unusual experience in Miami Beach related to your installation. I wrote a story about it called TsunaMiami, which left me with more questions than answers. All the Nazi Zombies here in New York here are full of empty. And I just tagged that asshole PeeCock Chopra as Al Franken's "Deep Thoughts" from vintage SNL. So my question to you is..................was it me, or the G?

It makes me wonder WTF is keeping me from experiencing events like this firsthand. I did some art direction in the past. More later, Peace out Bro

........construction pic looks good and sturdy like our NYC bomb da bass subway cars. More later.....
