Time to get started actually doing something to get ready...

Here are three designs for the signs that will be out front (same size as the Booby Bar's):

Started out with something funky on top and formal on the bottom


Then tried the same font as I used for the BB, top and bottom


But the W is too distracting, so tried this


And I kinda like it.The letters will have a double row of lights (again, like the BB's) but in the last one would have a single row on each of the 'stripes'.

Oh yeah, I guess I should add a pic of the sign I'm talking about, in case you've never seen it...


So... What do y'all think?

Over on the FB version of the Embassy there are some that like the middle version even with the XL 'W'. So here is one more to check out:



The W reduced and the letters in Embassy enlarged (except for the Y) so that both words are straight across on top.

The big "w" is horrid, to be honest. Throws the balance of the sign & makes you try to figure out the "inside joke" of why it's bigger (like the "o"'s of the Booby Bar sign). Useless distraction.

This is my favorite of the ones shown:

edit: I know why the "o"'s in Booby Bar were bigger- I meant to say the "w" isn't serving a similar function here.

Ugh, yea. The W does NOT fit the rest of that type face. You can't kern anything into it. I'd turn an M over and use that.

Kerning definitely won't fix anything, though you might be able to round it out with photoshop or an image editor- a rounder base on it would still work with the other letters (however, it would make the "w" really heavily weighted and still overpowering. Wheee.).

The one with the 80's ish louvered letters? Maybe turn it into outlines and make it so the upper corners are no wider than the H, while at the same time making the stems REALLY shallow.

(This is making me wistful of my days with fontographer and making typefaces...)

I think they make the top part of the W big to offset the white space along the sides - especially lower down - so that it has the same "weight" as the other letters (like the H). But I'm certainly not an expert on font styles - I just tend to look for the heavier ones because of the lights I want to put around them. I found a lot of really nice fonts but thought that they would be too hard to read from a distance...
