I didn't spend a whole lot of time at the temple, but what time I did spend seemed pretty clear that someone with a lot of wattage on the 10 side had their speakers aimed at them. If that was Osiris, shame on them (and if not, shame on whoever it was). If you bring something out there you're responsible for the gear and the impact it has. It's not quite sound design 101, but it's still a 100-level thing you pay attention to - know where your speakers are throwing. It's not very hard, you just walk your perimeter and look around. And it's common sense for anyone bringing a lot of power is to angle the speakers downward a bit - in the open desert a big rig can carry for miles. It's worth pointing out that on temple burn night while there were a few big heavy bass notes starting up inappropriately soon after the temple started burning, they appeared to have gotten the hint from someone and shut things down after a minute or two. Hopefully there's a lesson learned in there somewhere and next year more thought is put into their sound design.

As for Simon's forthcoming tell-all, I'm glad you're going to take a few proverbial deep breaths. I don't doubt there was wrongdoing or carelessness or that your anger and frustration aren't justified, but unloading what amounts to camp drama in a public forum is a no-win situation for all those involved. If you can, take the higher road and move on. Part on the best terms you can, and focus your time and energy on big crazy epic shit that does it right in every possible way for next time.

Glad you just posted that I didn't know someone was actually beating sound when everyone was getting ready for the temple burn. Osiris pulled its sound and lights Sat/Sunday morning after the burn of the man. So there is no way that we were the ones doing that. Also we did have all of our speakers pointed 15% down. I am out of this thread now since going public with crap talk never ends up well for anyone. I will say sorry again if our sound some how hit the temple. I doubt it but if it did I am sorry and I will make sure it was to never happen again.

I camped at 9:30 & E, right next to the Black Rock Bell phone booth where you could talk to God.

Travis: Thanks for your post and your apology. In regards to your remarks about where you intended to direct/point your audio output let me add this: on Labor Day morning at about 9AM I rode my bike out to the deep playa and made it as far as the "Oasis" lounge/installation. I was there alone and there were no motorized vehicles anywhere near me on the playa. I heard your camp playing as I made my way out to deep playa and I actually appreciated the early morning beats. However, when I got all the way out to the "Oasis" I could not even enjoy the silence of the deep playa and that was because the bass from your camp was so deep and intense that I could feel both my eardrums and the air around me vibrating. Please understand that I am in no way hating on you or your camp or EDM in this post. I'm just telling you straight up that somebody or somebodies in your camp f*cked up big time with your sound system this year. Never before have I gone to The Temple or deep playa and not been able to enjoy some level of silence. One of the things I love about BM is the ability one has to enjoy both the madness of BRC and the emptiness and silence of the deep playa. For the sake of the event and the community PLEASE get this situation figured out and don't let it happen again next year. Big hugs.
RedHeaven wrote:I would personally never expect complete silence at the temple or anywhere in BRC. In my opinion, as long as art cars dont blast the hell out of the temple or street areas, its all the city pulse.

My fav DJ is everything mixed together!
Red: I don't expect pure silence at The Temple or anywhere else on the playa but during my previous 4 burns ('07, '08, '10 ad '1) I was able to go to The Temple and hear the environment around me. Had the Gamelatron been installed in this year's Temple, as opposed to last year's Temple, then I never would have been able to hear the beautiful sounds that that device makes. Last year I stood on the second floor of The Temple on multiple occasions and listened to the Gamelatron play and never had any trouble discerning the notes being played.

BTW, one of my favorite things at BM is hearing the audio mash up of sound camps and roving art cars and in that sense I'm not some uptight purist who demands that The Temple be sound free. I'm simply frustrated by what happened on the playa this year in regards to the noise coming from the 10 o'clock side of the city. End of story.

Distrikt, on the other hand, brought down the fucking house again. One of my favorite moments was watching a live bass player and a synth-fiddler up on the tower playing to the music on Monday or Tuesday. [/quote]

The live bass player was Joel Kellogg and the electric violin was Homer Hsu. They were playing over DJ Clarkie :)

I camped at 9:30 & E, right next to the Black Rock Bell phone booth where you could talk to God.
That thing scares me. On my second burn I picked it up and a voice answered. I was starting to feel the effects of heat exhaustion, and all I could do was ask God if he likes root beer. I gave him our camp address and he said he might meet me there. When I explained this to a friend, who is a full-blown born again John 3:16 Christian and didn't buy any of it, I told her what I took from the experience was this:

Regardless of your belief, or lack thereof, if a phone rang or something happened and "God" (or Isis or Zeus or the President or the spirit of a relative, or a personal idol or The Most Intersting Man in the World) was suddenly there to speak with you, do you have ANY idea what you would say? In the end, I croaked out "thank you" and beat it back to camp.

You might want to re-read all of Travis' posts... He has already stated that his sound camp pulled their plugs and took down their systems Sunday morning after the man burn. Their camp wasn't operational on Monday (or Sunday night during Temple burn)... Seems it was someone else causing this problem. (Gotta admit, I'm almost kind of surprised any of the sound camps were still functioning Monday morning...)

I am planning to take to the internet in the near future to clearly voice my disgust that the mega-sound camps and the "sound police" at BMORG allowed the airspace of The Temple to be polluted almost 24/7 by the sound systems of the mega sound camps. Since my first burn I have been awed by the silence that can be found at The Temple. This year I volunteered as a Temple Guardian and during my shifts there was never a time when the air was not filled with MEGA THUMP coming from far across the playa. While Root Society was certainly loud their output paled in comparison to the audio maelstrom emenating from the 9PM side of the city. Was it Entheon Village that was responsible for that awfulness? To anyone who's going to get down on me for writing this post: FYI, I do not dislike EDM. I in fact LOVE Robot Heart and Heart Deco. I just don't think that it's right that the physical and spiritual soul of the city and the event was desecrated this year by clueless sound camps who had no respect for any space or person that existed beyond the borders of their camp and culture. And how the f*ck was it that the "sound police" at BMORG did NOTHING about the situation? Any veteran burner could have recognized that this year the mega sound camps took their audio capacity to DEFCON 1.

he was talking about ALL WEEK you dumb ass.

again, i state, it was osiris's sound system that was heard at the temple because of its ill thought out speaker direction.

maybe not the night of the temple burn, but certainly the rest of the week.

ok...any other half assed apologies?

Realizing THREE sound stages is a phenomenal logistics nightmare, was there no MOOP plan in place? I know your heart must break for the love and toil you exercise and see it finish in shambles. Maybe some things are too ambitious? I ask myself that question a lot and do not face near the installations, crowds and aftermath as you.

From the pics it looks like RS left firewood behind, which isn't good obviously. But it doesn't seem as egregious as leaving a car, trailer, couch, bbq, jars of piss, etc.

I have never been a fan of the sound camps, but I always figured let people burn how they want. Camping on 2:30 this year I saw the detritus from the 2:00 spoke walking up and down our street nightly. I lost count of the drunk, drug addled people I had to give help and directions too.

The sound pollution coming from the 10:00 spoke marred the experience at our friends deep playa art piece as well.

What's the solution Simon? Is there one?
