Car Rental Advice For An Overseas Solo Virgin
Hello all!
I'm about to attend my first burn this year and will be traveling solo from New Zealand.
My plan is to rent a car in SF and drive to BRC with a stop in Reno to stock up on supplies.
Is this a sensible plan? Wht other ways would there be to get there with all my stuff? Any reccomendations for car rental places?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers

In my opinion, at this late date and since you are traveling solo, renting an automobile is very sensible thing to do.
Locating a rental truck or van at this late date will be almost impossible. With a little planning, every basic thing that will need will fit in an automobile.
If I were renting a car, I would look for the largest and longest hatchback that I could find. Room to haul your necessary gear plus room for some fun stuff trumps all, even if it costs a little more.
If you will be bringing a bike, you should be able to find a rear mounted bike rack at at dedicated bike store.
I attending solo my first time and I do not think that I could have had a better time if I had done it any other way.
Stop by the airport for a visit and you just might score a scenic flight over the city.
See ya in the dust and have fun.......

If you need more room than a "standard automobile" will provide, you might wish to consider renting either a Chevrolet Suburban or a little smaller Chevrolet Tahoe.
I do not think you would have a problem locating and renting either one of these automobiles. You might wish to make your guaranteed reservation while you are still home.
Sometimes, both of these vehicles come with a receiver hitch which would make attaching a rear receiver hitch bike rack easy. If you decide to either one of these vehicles, it might be worth requesting one with a receiver hitch.

May I recommend a minivan? I've rented every year, and the minivan was the best vehicle by far. More room once you fold down the back seats and easier to load than an SUV. Generally better fuel mileage. And you can usually fit a bike in there. Clean it well and scatter a few Cheerios and crayons in there, and no one will know it went to the playa.

Mini Van ---- Perfect for one person..... Absolutely Brilliant.
Most likely very easy to find one to rent. Gobs of room and you could even sleep inside.
In my opinion, I say -- Go For It.........

We have a contact in Sacramento who is very burner-friendly. Has minivans last I checked. Can even rent you 10 or 16-foot box trucks. PM me for details if that is a way you want to go.

Mate we are renting a minivan from LAX, flying in from across the ditch to you.
If you visit the UK website of the big rental companies such as National, Alamo, Budget etc, you'll get a much better deal for US rentals that includes all your insurances.
Non US citizens can rent through these sites only, you'll save a bucket load of money verses the US websites for the same company.
