Fernley to BRC: Elevation changes

Post by RedManRising » Wed Aug 19, 2015 11:42 pm

Fernley and Black Rock City both seem to be approximately the same elevation. Does anyone know if there are significant elevation changes on the route between the two? Steep grades to climb and descend?

No steep grades. There is one spot where it's a totally blind curve going around a mountain. Mostly rolling hills where there are hills.

That's my favorite part of the drive, about five miles north of Nixon. I consider it the "Gateway to the Weird".

nothing steep, but there are a few pretty long grades, if you are thinking vehicle heating issues.

Those grades on 447 won't be anything compared to what you encountered getting to Fernley from San Fran.

^^^^ this. I consider it flat, after getting 'over the hill' from Sacramento. I don't drive 447 at night though. Since you don't know the road, take it slow. Of course, depending on when you are driving, you may just be following tail lights. Through the reservation is open range though, and apparently the cows like to come onto the road at night because it's warmer. So watch out for cows. I've never driven at night, so I've actually never seen any of these fabled cows.

You could probably look that up on the internet to get a specific answer. A lot of times the wiki pages for a town will have elevation info.

omg
I remember my first encounter with that Dragon Hill. In a 30' RV with too many cases of water in the rear.

For the hills, you can play with this.

Here's my attempt. (Elevation only shows in meters... maybe you can find a way to show feet)
route selection, Fernley to BRP.jpg
Fernley on left, BRP on right.

And an attempt at routing around Dragon Hill.

Slightly OT, but those coming down from Cedarville will encounter a few uphill, manageable grades, but there's a looong downhill thru narrow, winding canyons approaching Gerlach. Heavier vehicles are advised to use lower gears and obey the speed limit signs. It's also open range and every time I've driven that road at night I've encountered cattle on the blacktop. I keep the high beams on, stay very vigilant, and no speeding or passing.

Super helpful. Thanks so much for the input. I am driving with little weight from San Francisco to Fernley but am taking on about 3,600 pounds in Fernley, so I will be driving very cautiously. Thirty foot RV towing 14' cargo trailer.
