Segways at the Burn...thoughts?

Hi all!

Last year was my first burn and I had a blast. The bike was OK, but I wanted something a little bit lazier . Anyone have experience with Segways out there? Is there a place to park them? To lock them up somewhere? How much weight can they carry? Battery life? Dust performance?

Would be great to hear some advice. Thanks!

You might have just unintentionally hit a very sensitive communal nerve. Many consider the Segway to be the hallmark of the "douch-bros" and "plug and play" camps or the "entitled elite". Rightly or wrongly, thats the label many assign. Be aware of that fact, and be prepared for the response. It may not be pretty.

Personally I cant see taking one out there and getting it destroyed, but thats me. They are fine bits of engineering and dont like playa dust. YMMV.

FWIW, an e-bike serves the same purpose, you can really mutate it and be-blinker it, and isnt only accepted, the culture embraces it and encourages it. So you might want to lean that direction if you are able.

So, I recently acquired a sitdown electric scooter for use at BM. How did this happen? Funny you should ask. A friend of mine needed help but I didn't want to charge him. Instead he offered use of his newish off-road Segways for BM. He and the kids are bored with them and he didn't care about playa destruction. Awesome! Segways at BM! ..............

Except that JT, PnP camps, etc pretty much made them the status symbol for BM douce. Not that I really care what people think... but in this case, this year, no. I just don't want to be that asshole. He owns a wheelchair company and instead gave me a nice scooter. Additionally, with the scooter, I don't care too much if it gets wrecked out there -- which it will.

Anyways, having minimal knowledge, if you decide to bring them the x2 model is best. Battery life if good as well but make sure you have a charging plan because they are not easy to move.

I have to agree with Mr GC. Personally I think they should be banned along with all other standing 2 wheel powered vehicles like power skateboards.

There is a company which rents that brand to high net worth sparkle ponies with delivery on playa. I hope the fuck they are paying their BLM dues as a registered vendor.

Consider, as has been suggested, a battery assisted 2 or 3 wheel bike with pedal backup. You could even have a 2 person side by side 3 wheeler.

If you are a disabled individual with documented health needs, there are many options. There are disabled vehicle application deadlines, which I think have passed. There is a Mobility Camp which sometimes posts on ePlaya - they are a great resource!

One of my peak experiences was to work on and decorate electric wheelchairs and other MVs for the earlier disabled mobility camp Hot Wheelz in a funky quonset pre burn.

Thank you! I've already installed 240 neopixels and have a nice seat planned. My goal is to keep it mostly intact in the hopes of finding a person at mobility camp who needs one late in the week.

Your post actually sums it up quite nicely. It's lazier. If you're planning on turning it into something cool and creative (great pic, Bless), I say go for it. Otherwise I suggest going for an e-Bike. It's a less vulgar and ostentatious display of wealth, and seems like it's a more efficient way to get around the playa. Plus bonus points of being able to pedal it home like a regular bike if the battery's charge should run down while you're out and about.

By the way, stand-up scooters are allowed in BRC but if it has a seat, it has to go through the same DMV mutant vehicle license application process any other mutant vehicle does, or be licensed as a Disabled Vehicle. The seat is pretty much the dividing line.

Wow! Thank you all. I feel like I learned a lot from this thread. I saw this camp on Facebook advertising Segway parking, and figured that maybe there were way more of them out there than I thought. Apparently the people that run that camp are filthy liars though. What kind of an a-hole would be so sarcastic to unsuspecting people? Isn't the playa about love and peace?

Funny moment last year when some poster child for the definition of sparkle pony rode her segway past our camp... it died, she ate shit, then cursing and swearing got up and very laboriously began dragging it back toward caravansary. Someone even offered to help and was ignored while the cursing continued.

I wouldn't recommend bringing one unless you want to look like a tourist.

What's the cost of a segway, anyway? Some of us are budget minded couch potatoes (which is exactly what you should be spending your money on, a motorized couch, instead of this latest status symbol). Anyway, to save some cash and avoid being seen as a douche-way, I was thinking next year to "gift" a ticket and ride the grateful recipient piggy-back for the week.

I realize that with this mode of transportation one's own strength is required, while all those hard-bodies cruising douche-ways would never consider exerting sweat producing physical energy anywhere other than a gym/spa. This is why I support segways on the playa, it is the quickest, surest way of telling, yeah, I'm better than them.
