Building a side-by-side tandem for the playa

Post by genghisbrc » Mon Jul 21, 2025 7:58 am

Here's our ride out there. It's a side-by-side tandem built from two regular bikes with no welding. Transports as two regular bikes on a bike rack, then assembled on-playa.

Here are the steps to build one yourself.

That looks fun, and super-clever! Seems like a more-functional variant of those Rhoades bikes/cars, since you can disconnect them and use like two separate bikes when you want.

bezacly, @trilobyte.

ALSO...transportation to-and-from playa is infinitely easier. we just bring out the bikes as...two regular ol' bikes on a regular ol' bike rack, and then do the assembly on the playa. no need for trailer, etc.

That's a great looking set up!
I agree on the ease of transportation...I've hauled a tricycle out there a few times and it takes some real tetris skills to do so.
Do you have any pictures of the progress of the build? Or tips and tricks that you learned in the process?
A parts list or measurements would be great if you had them on hand to share.
Have a great burn...I'll be burning from afar again this year.
