Official Gate/447 Information sources

As a precaution, I want to have access to information about gate/highway closures in case they recommend not driving up 447 until later. I recall that this has happened in the past (I wasn't affected) due to severe whiteout, rain, I think one year there was concern about a brush fire near the road, etc. I'm familiar with BMIR and Gate radio, but not sure that reaches as far as the Reno area. Do you stream their broadcast online? Is there another specific source, perhaps Facebook or twitterX, or hopefully something else, that the BMP uses to temporarily warn people to stay off of 447?

BMIR is accessible worldwide via the iHeartRadio app, I believe. They also still operate the @bmantraffic account on X (formerly twitter, boo... hiss...). Word of caution, you may need to be either signed in, or a paid subscriber on X in order to see the most recent posts first. When viewing logged out on the web, it gravitates to posts with most likes/reshares, which is often from previous years.

My advice would be to look up the BMIR station before departing Reno. Know that traffic info is provided on the regular, so within about 10 minutes of any given moment, you'll hear if there is anything crucial for BRC travelers.

I also want to give a MASSIVE shout-out to the relatively new and unsung hero, BRC Dashboard! The placeholder page will be updated to point to the 2025 dashboard when that gets up and running, and no kidding that page has all the key info. Weather, traffic, gate times, exodus times, etc. It works equally well in a phone's browser, on a tablet, or on a computer.... and it will be accessible anywhere you can get a bit of internet/cell service.

This is a good question. All kinds of things can happen on the highways, and things can happen fast.

Google Maps gathers traffic flow data and some items, like crashes, debris in the road, or LEO, are crowdsourced to the map. There are big gaps in mobile connectivity between Wadsworth and about Empire for that to work. There may be connectivity Gerlach to 8 Mile.

The official BMORG BMTraffic in the dashboard is a good high level source. Nevada Highway Patrol is good and they announce road closures, including for wildfire.

I participated in rainpocalypse. In my observation, that year gate radio, which was automated, looped outdated announcements which were non-useful. Hope that ground truth corresponds to Gate Radio, BMIR, and BMTraffic announcements.
