Traveling North on Nevada HWY 95

Post by centrifuge » Thu Dec 28, 2006 11:11 am

In the Travel Info section, under LA to BRC - Option Three: Spooky Desert ..... is says "DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THIS ROUTE. IN 2005 SEVERAL PARTICIPANTS REPORTED THAT THE TRIBAL POLICE IN SCHURZ HARASSED AND ARRESTED THEM WITHOUT PROBABLE CAUSE."

Shurz would be on HWY 95. I'd like to take the 95 because I will be coming from the Las Vegas area and taking the 95 would be the quickest route. At least according to MapQuest.com anyway. Anybody have any experience driving this route? I am actually coming from SW Utah & aparently going down to vegas & back up the 95 is the best route for me. Suggestions?

I drove up 95 from Vegas this year and had no problems going through there. I did stick to the speed limit though, then they would (hopefully) have no excuse to pull me over.

Thanks for the info. Good news too. We'll be in a 30ft RV so doing the speed limit should be pretty easy for us.

What about services along this stretch of highway? Looks pretty remote from the maps & aerial photos...

The services are few and far between. You will probably hit some every couple of hours or so from what I remember. Make sure you have a load of cd's as you don't get a radio signal for a lot of the drive.

The journey up is awesome, you skirt round the edge of Death Valley. I can't wait to do the drive again this year.

I have done it multiple times w/o a problem, though it has been 3 years since the last trip that route. You are going to want to gas up in Hawthorne (station by the Napa has traditionally been the cheapest).

Also Hawthorne has a great new-last-year RV stop called Whiskey Flats west of town that sells propane, and a fun casino (the Palace?) with all-night food :P

The police incidents are over in another thread (will go see if I can find it) and sounded troubling (a lane drift/unsecure load/minor vehicle light-out infraction stop leading to a drug search and impoundment of the vehicle and detention of the driver/passengers) so I held my breath going through the reservation this year even though I, vehicle and passengers travel clean and sober...but it was at 2am and no law officers were spotted.

edit to add: just do a search on Schurz...it turns up in several threads : )

I have driven through Schurz many times and the only time I had a problem was getting cited doing 80 when in fact I was doing 87. There are also three places on the southern end of Schurz that sell fireworks, though I'm certain nobody going to Burningman would be interested in skyrockets, morters, repeaters, Roman candles, or various explosives.
