Getting to Burning Man from the UK

Post by feebz » Sat Mar 20, 2004 1:39 pm

We're a group of students from Newcastle who are gagging to go to Burning man. Its a subject we're always going on about. There'll be about 15 to 20 of us and chances are we wont make it this year as we've no money but are really dying to go, probably in 2005. I guess its fallen to me to organise it but I really haven't a clue how and am not all that organised. Does anyone have any tips for me on how to get us there, camping, vehicles etc, bearing in mind we're only aged 21 to 23 and might not be able to hire cars etc? I don't really understand about the way the camps work either... Also if anyone has any idea of a rough figure of how much it will all cost that would be really helpful. Thanks x

1. Read the survival guide.

2. You might want to check out the Black Rock Burner Hostel. (http://www.blackrockburnerhostel.com). I've heard nothing but good thing about it from international travelers.

3. Re:the way camps work--You might want to take a look at some of the other threads here on the eplaya, there's a lot of them about how camps work, picking/joining a camp and whteher or not to.

4. Cost? that's really up to you. But I will note that you're at anadvantage, things are usually significantly cheaper here than the UK.

A side note: I have a friend near Newcastle who might be interested in coming to BM next year. She's about the same age range, maybe you guys could talk.

Hi I am from Edinburgh and I am making plans to head to BM 04 and I would be happy to answer any of your questions as best I can from the UK perspective; PM me. I am a BM virgin but picking up things fast.
There is no quick and easy answer and I agree with Ivy and checking out as much of the website and forum as possible. You get a perspective on what to expect and what sort of things you are actually likely to face, not gained by only a cursory browse.
Cost wise I won't know till I get back but I am planning on 3 weeks in the USA, a week either side for travelling and should be looking at the £1500 range. But if you are just doing the festival and there are that many of you costs would drop considerably depending upon what options you choose.

NIIIIIIIIICE plug, Ivy! Thanks! Print this message and bring it to the Burn as a coupon good for a full-body tongue bath in the privacy of my air-conditioned RV on the Playa.
