Self Storage options close to BRC

Post by camp-photon » Sun Aug 23, 2009 11:58 pm

What are the most popular and economical storage options for reusable Burning Man camp items after Labor Day?

Does it make sense to store stuff or just burn/donate whatever you can in BRC and haul the rest 800 miles?

I hate to see usable materials go to waste but storage is usually the most overpriced rental real estate you can get. 12 months is a lot of rent.

Any good deals in Reno or other outlying areas?

Thanks!

I pay around $700 / year for a climate controlled 10 x 10 storage unit near the Reno airport. Holds all of my theme camp gear plus bar plus bikes plus personal camping gear for about 5 people. After paying $7 / cubic foot to ship it all back and forth every year I decided that storage was worth it to me.

Ask yourself:

How much do you pay to move your stuff to and from playa every year?

How much do you invest in stuff that you'd be donating every year?

Will you going to the burn every year?

Do you have friends you trust that you'd want to share space and costs with for storage?

Does the space need to keep a consistent temp (storing liquids?) or is outdoor / non-climate controlled okay for you?

Once you know that stuff, I suggest google is your friend to get a llist and locations for a variety of storage spaces; then call and shop around for good prices.

Generally it's cheaper further out of Reno but I like the convenience of having my coolers stored close to where I want to food shop. And I like having a laundromat nearby to clean all my bedding etc. before putting it in to storage. Oh, and the car wash next door to the storage place has been useful for spraying the worst of the dirt off stuff before storing it.

Storage wouldn't be viable for us, we use our camp gear even in winter.

So, other considerations:

Do you use your camp gear for other events such as regionals?

Do you need to clean, repair or otherwise maintain your gear?

I'm probably an extreme case of tons of gear...

While I keep the bulk of my burn gear in storage in Reno, I also have a set of gear at home that covers my Regional, Decomp and other year-round Burn camping adventures closer to home. Not to mention the smaller stuff that I fly with and use for my backpacking adventures.

yup. Too. Much. Stuff.

I know this thread is old, but coming on here to bitch about Public Storage on McCarran near the Trader Joe's. Super convenient, nice to pay online blah blah blah, but I'll be damned if they aren't predatory landlords. Have had storage there since 2017, and our unit has DOUBLED in price into 2022. Looking into a local guy instead with fair pricing. Since we're taking out 90% of the stuff for the burn anyway, might as well move this year. I didn't want the headache, but so be it.
