BMT announced that vehicles that were past the accident on CR34 made it onto the playa. Those and everyone already on Gate Road on the playa have made it past Gate. There is no wait at Gate.

Once the accident is cleared - still expected to be some hours from now - then 40 minutes after those first allowed onto the playa will be at Gate. ASSUMING no one is a jerk and speeds and puts everyone on Gate Road and at Gate into a whiteout...

That's going to be a long time sitting on the road in the sun. Winds 26 mph at ~90 F.

Long time to be running an engine to run A/C. I bet those with a swamp-cooler that can run for a few days on its deep-cycle battery are happier.

Every vehicle needs enough gas to get onto playa, get to Gate, BRC, and back out again upon Exodus. From running for A/C, how many will now need to refuel in Gerlach. Is there enough gas for them all?

Will they need to start running one-way police-escorted runs south of Gerlach on the south-bound 447 lane for emergency vehicles, and later for essential supplies (food, gas delivery?), and if backed up for too long, then for locals.

Of course all Burners have enough food & water with them. Right? Everyone read the required official Survival Guide?

p.s.
I hope everyone who plans to leave BRC on _______ day to catch a flight (same day?) keeps this type of closure delay in mind.

CR34 was re-opened around 5:14 pm.
The Gerlach webcam shows:
  • 5:19 vehicles starting to move in Gerlach. Deputies present. Vehicles stopped on 447.
  • 5:27 more vehicles cleared out of Gerlach. Vehicles still stopped on 447.
  • 5:32 vehicles moving through Gerlach. Vehicles on 447 between Empire and Gerlach are moving.
BMT reports staff will be ready at Gate and that there are intermittent whiteouts.

For those of you coming in from CA expecting to be behind the rush: I-80 eastbound from CA into western Reno is hugely slowed due to construction. Currently stop & go near Reno.

And tonight seems to be the night for hitting more poles and car fires in California, I-80 to Nevada or the 50 southern Lake Tahoe route. And just before Forebay that includes melted wheels and embers blowing off into the forest with active flames and Calfire enroute.

Windy.com shows the wind at Gerlach at 2 mph, temp in the low 70s F. The playa livestream seems to match that wind, with good visability to distant lights on the playa, with no glow or haze visible from the lights, and neither squalls nor balls of dust maurading across the playa. Only one speeding bike seen, unlike this afternoon's dash here and dash there. There is someone with well-lit butterfly winds who is jogging from light to light on the playa - nice clear image. Even the leaves on the Gerlach webcam seem to be resting.
Why do I get the uneasy feeling this is the calm before the storm.
Forcast for 95 F this coming afternoon. And a high of 98 F on Tuesday and Wednesday. That'll hit the Virgins. Winds only mild to 10 mph. And there it is: "slight chance" (20%) of thunder-storms on Wednesday and Wednesday night.

They stopped providing the Wadsworth to gravel onto playa times.
The number they give varies. You have to read carefully what they say (as I didn't for the first day's numbers, corrected now). The number(s) may be Gate Road driving time, the time waiting for your turn at Gate, sometimes separately, sometimes only one, sometimes combined. And their wording varies, so it's easy (for me) to misunderstand. Where they revert to only providing the Gate Wait, I take the drive time as 40 minutes, but 50 if there's reports of wind & dust/whiteouts. This will understate the Gate Road drive, as its condition and speeders kicking up dust can greatly extend that, but when they don't have or don't provide that... best guestimate of the 40 or 50.

Like this:
  • "Zero traffic on Gate Road"
    - Pretty obvious. No waiting.
  • "Traffic on Gate road is starting to increase to about 1 hour."
    - O.K., the drive is taking to about one hour.
  • "Wait times are still under an hour."
    - O.K., the wait at Gate is about one hour.
  • "total drive/wait time for Gate Road remains at less than an hour."
    - Straightforward to what it means, but what's this "remains". What did the prior tweet mean? Was that the waiting time or the drive & waiting time...

Wind light to moderate. Low dust.
(eplaya site is so slow/hung that I couldn't load a 209 KB file for the graph. ~23x users. It's taken so long trying since the prior BMT tweet that the 2 pm tweet just came out. We'll see if the new file will upload or not...)

All day, on traffic cams and the Gerlach webcam, I've only seen sparse or light traffic, usually sparse. Yet Gate Wait has gone from zero to an hour and a half. I'm very curious to get the story from people entering this day as to how many gates were open.

livestream (livestream.com/accounts/28711395/events/8793427) shows light winds on the playa, enough to blow some flags out to their side some, and the bits of dust stirred up by the foot & bike traffic is slowly blowing away to the south. Looks like the occasional gust lifts some dust and that slowly moves off.

Graph format slightly updated: Gate Road Time no longer sometimes displays the combined Gate Road and Gate Wait times. Now each has its own colour: Gate Road Travel Time, Gate Wait Time, and when supplied combined, a Combined Gate Road Travel & Gate Wait time, and are recorded depending on the sometimes ambiguous times supplied or times known.
Anything that has a range instead of an approximate time, the extra time is displayed as yellow.
