Staying till Tuesday
Staying till Tuesday
Louise and I are considering staying till Tuesday to avoid the exodus clog. Are there still portapotties? What could we volunteer for on Monday? Any suggestions?

You'll be asked to leave on Monday same as everyone else unless you've made prior arrangements.Louise and I are considering staying till Tuesday to avoid the exodus clog. Are there still portapotties? What could we volunteer for on Monday? Any suggestions?
Each year the BLM gets more and more strict with the numbers of people at the event after the event/permit dates end.
More than in any other year in the past early-in arrangements and post-event hangovers will be will restricted and closely monitored. If by the end of the event on Monday anyone not listed will be asked to strike their camp and get in the Exodus line.
In the past this has been a problem with *lots* of camps and individual stragglers attracting attention from the BLM, straining resources and generally being a nuisance to those trying to get as much done in as little time as possible. Those not cooperating can count on probably having the BLM notified of the situation which might be problematic for some.
Those working after the event would GREATLY appreciate your cooperation is clearing out of Black Rock City when the official time to say adieu comes around.

Just go to the cafe and ask.
And there are always big camps that need help packing and tearing down.
As long as you are doing something that needs to be done, I don't think you'll have any trouble staying.
It doesn't have to be that formal, except for getting in early.
Find something you want to do and offer to help.
Sometimes you don't have to ask, just show up.
Try this-
Hi, I'm _____.
Give me tools and show me what to do.

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

MOOP patrol, Teardown Crews, Exodus.. they all can use some help. If you volunteer with Exodus they may have you take a small course during the event off playa to get certified as a flagger. As long as you are working they appreciate those that volunteer and stay over a day or so. But the party doesn't start until AFTER a days labor is put in.

Probably the best contact is Mayfield who is a DPW person.Who would we contact to see if we can volunteer for cafe teardown?
Quite honestly I'd be very surprised if DPW or anyone else were to take on volunteers after the event. I know they didn't take many last year and as I mentioned before the BLM will be really putting the pressure on the organizers to have all participants out of BRC before the expiration of the permit at 12:01am that Tuesday.
But, that's certainly not my call. I'm just passing on info that I know about firsthand.
Can that be taken before the burn? We could do the course during one of our visits to Reno if we knew where it was offered.Isotopia wrote:BTW, I believe that small course is an 8 hour certification class offered by the state and requires that one attend in its entirety.
[edit:
is this it?

It's 4 hours and $45/person]
That would be info you'd find out from the guy who heads up Exodus/DMV. Odwally is his name.

Indeed it does. One plus of being a volunteer for Exodus and getting the cert for Nevada state is that your cert is good for 2 years. You can get a job anywhere in Nevada as a flagger.AntiM wrote:Hey, if you can stand for hours in any weather, flagging pays decent money doesn't it?
I suggest you fill out the volunteer form and/or drop a line to someone like Odwally or Logan to see about taking the course beforehand. The requirement for flagging is to be certified in NV.. though not all Exodus helpers are flaggers. I just heard that they do offer a training during the event yet off playa.. possibly in Gerlach. I was thinking of volunteering this year but I am not 100 percent physically so I can't work with DPW
If I am really lucky I may get to help put the finishing touches on an art installation after we get the camp setup. Don't know if I will be hanging out after the event since I am going early to setup camp and meet up with DPW to get a feel for what they do and where I can fit in and help out.
