meet group beforehand?/rent bikes

Post by maybetinymaybesad » Thu Aug 09, 2007 9:45 am

I have two questions.

The first is, what's the best way to meet some people beforehand who you might be able to stay near or with?

The second is, is there any way to rent bikes once we get there? I just don't think it'll be possible for me to bring a bike? How do people from far away bring bikes with them?

I apologize for the presumably newbie questions
I'm totally new to this and need as much help as you can stand to give. I'm an extremely open-minded college student who appreciates new experiences.

First:
Well, given your location of New York, Seattle, and Boston, it's difficult to make specific suggestions. Look at
http://regionals.burningman.com/
and find a group near you. Keep in mind that this is a couple of weeks before many burners depart, so your opportunities are limited.

On the other hand, you can meet people at the event - just show up, scout around for people that look like you'll get along and chat. If you seem to get along, ask where they'd suggest you camp, and they may invite you to join them. Burning Man is full of 40,000 friends you haven't met yet and a couple of dozen people you'll hate. :->

Second:
I'm afraid you are too late, again. There are no rentals or sales at Black Rock City (except ice and coffee), so you'll need to arrange for transportation before you arrive. Reno is one place to get bikes, but the pickings are slim around the time of the Burn because 20 or 30,000 people have gotten there already and rented/bought/stole all the bikes for miles around Reno. If you can't arrange a bike before the event, your best shot is to steal one while you're there. Just be naked, shaved, and tattooed when you do it, and no one will be able to tell you from the 15,000 other guys just like you.

Come anyway, you'll still have the time of your life.
