biking from susanville, smoke creek desert

hi
has anyone here ever driven from susanville east to gerlach? google maps shows a route going directly across the smoke creek desert, on smoke creek road. im thinking about biking this stretch, but am concerned that the route may be poorly maintained and untraveled.
