It figures - I just got a call for an interview for a really great job. They want to schedule it for THURSDAY, the week of the burn. I rescheduled for a phone interview, but don't know what the likelihood of making a quiet, hour-long call from a Gerlach land line would be. Anyone got ideas?
Thanks!
Whitney
Best quiet place to make a call in Gerlach?

almost impossible.what the likelihood of making a quiet, hour-long call from a Gerlach land line would be.
There's only one pay-phone, and there would be a long line of loud and pissed people forming behind you as you hogged it. If this had come up sooner you might have been able to get a hotel room, but by now they're booked solid by the various LEO's out there (if there were any free ones to begin with- Gerlach's not exactly a big resort town.)
This may be a situation where you need to rent a satellite phone and then drive somewhere peaceful outside BRC for your call. Or plan on taking a day off and going to Reno for your call (not joking, unless of course you aren't willing to go the extra distance to get the job)

Wow, costs for satellite phones are a lot cheaper than I expected. It looks like it'd certainly be cheaper to rent for the week than to manage a ride to Reno for a phone call (assuming they call you). And more environmentally friendly too!
Dunno what sort of a job you're going for, but I think in my industry the effort and technology would certainly impress them. (Although it could make them feel that you spend frivolously, depending on your industry - then I suppose you could tell them it's borrowed.)

It's hard to have a normal conversation with someone with 6' acrylic rods strapped to your back.

Get the Sat phone.
This happened to my girlfriend two years ago and we had to leave the event and drive towards Reno until we got a signal on her phone. It was stressful, I got a speeding ticket (38 in a 35 zone) and cost us a half day on the playa.
IF POSSIBLE, stay in the event! It's a pain in the ass going back and forth between BM and the default world.
Good luck with your interview!

Irony. You're soaking in it.
