Shipping camping equipment to Reno or Sacramento

Post by jmbyars » Mon Jun 02, 2008 9:57 pm

I am thinking about flying into Reno or Sacramento and driving a rent car to the burn.
Has anyone ever heard of someone shipping their camping equipment to themselves in say Reno or Sacramento? How did it work?

This is a topic of concern for me as well; we don't want to be checking a 100 pound dead body sized cooler onto the plane, and we're trying to do this on the cheap. The cooler tends to open up if it's not boxed.

Last year we just rented a UPS box near the airport for 3 months for $45, and shipped all our stuff there. But if anyone knows of any way to do this as a one off thing, I'm all ears.

I'd read a few places here that the Gerlach PO and even Bruno's would let you ship to them and pick your stuff up there if you paid a modest fee. I'm only looking to ship about 125lbs of stuff total, the majority of it in the cooler. The other items will arrive by mail or UPS.

Thanks,

Anyone interested can ship their gear to my place if they'd like, I'm about 15 min. east of Sacramento in Loomis.

I'd be cautious and line up the rental car pronto. There may be no problem, but as the Burn approaches and 20,000 people start trying to rent cars in Reno, things can get hectic.

Anybody that can weigh in on shipping to reno? Really the UPS box worked well, it's just that if it can be done for cheaper I'd be excited :).

I say just fly with it. Last year myself and another friend flew from Atlanta to SFO with all our stuff. We each had a carryon, then we both checked a cooler (that was stuffed w/ camping supplies...really anything that would fit) and a giant duffel bag. Using the coolers as suitcases works great. Just make sure you strap the hell out of em to make sure they don't bust open at some point.
