Shipping a Generator

Post by rhyolite » Tue Jul 15, 2008 2:38 pm

I have a small honda generator and live on the East Coast. We are shipping most of our stuff in a container truck, but cannot put the generator in the container because it has had gas in it at one point (oil and gas have been removed, but there is still trace amounts, and they won't let us load it into the container).
I'd like to ship the generator to a friend of mine in Reno.
Does anyone have experience with shipping a small generator via UPS or another service? Do I have to declare it as HazMat if the gas and oil have been emptied, or can I just ship it ground?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
How do you east coasters get your generators to burning man?

Shipping generator

I purchased a genie off of e-bay, oil and gas removed came UPS. Why don't you ask UPS ?

If you open the tank, drain the gas AND the bottom of the carb and let it air I don't see why they won't let you put it a container. Especially if you enclose the thing in a couple of garbage bags to eliminate any smell. I would speak to someone else at the "they" who refused you that knows better.

Or just pack and send the thing off and tell them it's your cache of RPG's

Seriously, entire cars are shipped in containers , with tanks 1/4 full of gas.
Stay hydrated my friend.

Are you going to use your generator to power your tesla coil/guitar amp like this guy?

you can rarely ever get all of the fuel out and if you dont, it takes very little fuel to vaporize into a source of ignition, or explosion.
