New Wheels on the Playa!

Post by oliverstwists » Wed Mar 03, 2004 9:17 am

Just have a question.
Has anyone ever tried using one of those fold up, compact non-electric scooters that was in fad about 4 years back? Or could anyone tell me if it would be feasible? I believe it uses rollerblade-type wheels, could be wrong though.

Any help would be great, I'm trying to avoid bringing a massive bike with me to the Burn.

Thanks
Ian.

The wheels are too small and will get clogged with dust and mud. It's likely to be easier to walk than to push one of those.

I have seen some with bigger bicycle style wheels, like 10" diameter. If you can find one of those it might work well. Or, you could try to arrange to have someone else haul the bike up for you. I've done that for people before.

There are scooters of that style that have inflatable tires instead of solid polyeurathane (sp?) wheels. DON'T use anything with rollerblade size wheels, the playa generally gets a top layer of powdery dust. You'll get nowhere. Bikes remain undefeated champions of playa terrain.

One of my transports last year was a kick scooter with 12" pneumatic ballon tires and it worked well; though a little less efficient than a bike it was perfect if going somewhere when walking was not fast enough, and was small enough to carry around if needed and great fun! Most sporting goods places have the big wheeled "trick" kick scooters. I might try to modify one with some extra fat flotation tires this year.

gas powered scooters

Post by BURNING GIRL » Sat Mar 13, 2004 2:18 pm

If you're going to get a scooter, I highly recomend a gas powered one. They come in all shapes and prices. I bought mine for $300 and it was delivered to my house. It was way more economical than an art car, which is still a dream of mine.

Earthquake

There was an earthquake magnitude 1.4 (small) on the playa last night. Someone trying out a really heavy art car or something?

I have a feeling this is going to be the "year of the scooter". They seem to be everywhere in my neighborhood now and I can't walk into a store without seeing several different models for sale.

The best style of bike, I think, is the beachcruiser model. They not only positon your torso upright so you can easily see what's going on, but you can steer with one hand while securing a frosty beverage in the other.

Agreed. I'd love to have a three-speed, though, because riding into the
wind with no gears kinda sucks. On the other hand, going out to the
open playa, putting the wind at my back, and propping my feet on the
handlebars to let the wind push me along makes me go wheeeeee!

electric Scooter

Post by Bob A » Thu Mar 25, 2004 11:56 am

I've been seeing alot of electric scooters in magazines and such for around the same price as some of the gas ones. Just recharge them with a solar panel or plug into someones generator and your all set and quiet. they get about 18 to 20 miles per charge so I think that would be at least a days travel for most people.

I agree. They're really horrid to be around. If you absolutely have to bring a scooter, please look into the electric kind.

I attached an extra muffler to mine and it works great, very little noise. Sure it was an extra few bucks, but it's a lot less thean running a generator for eight to ten hours just to charge an electric scooter.

I also agree with the cruiser idea. I have one and love it, it even has a basket the perfect camp arctica ice bag size.
