Question about Motor Oil

Post by Elderberry » Wed Aug 18, 2010 9:52 pm

I know that you can't store gas for long periods of time without it degrading. But what about oil? Does it have a shelf life?

Thanks,

JK

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

I've used oil that is years old. except for water getting in, not much can go wrong, IMO.

Mobil 1 recommends a shelf life of 5 years. Caveats: The container has to stay sealed. Otherwise if moisture gets in, all bets are off once it's went through a few heating and cooling cycles.

I've used oil in non-critical small engines that was over 22 years old without trouble. YMMV.

Back to the gas comment Stabil is a wonderful thing for long term gasoline storage.
