I certainly will, it would be great to meet you! Look for a couple of white guys and a black woman in an SUV. I'll probably be driving and either wearing a black fez with a pyramid on it (long story) or a really stupid floppy red hat (I love my stupid red hat!). We'll probably have a small pile of 2x4s lashed to the roof.

Pulling off the tarmac to a vista of neon, fire and distant boot-in-the-dryer - Awesome.

But this is all my pointless observation. When I do go I get there Friday night before gate opens for general admission so it's ~ half hour, mostly spent on hugs and greetings and chitchat with gate staff and greeters. The line is usually ~ dozen vehicles.
We arrived on Friday before the gate opens last year around 4-5pm and it was very very dark by the time we got to camp. It seemed there was only one woman taking tickets, EAPs, and searching 2 lines of vehicles. :( I hope we don't have the same problem this year.
Suck it.

I must of got real lucky with timing last year, Got to the gate at about 12:20am on Monday and it took about 2 or so hours to get in. Hell I found camp, set up my tent, drank a few beers, and checked out the man all before sunrise. Not expecting to get that lucky this year.

Maybe a planned quarantine in D Lot might be the better option for older vehicles that might otherwise overheat from hours and hours of idling in stop and go traffic.

Given that, what's the best time to arrive (to minimize time in line) if the plan is to arrive on 8/29?

There is no "magic time".. the line will be gnarly whatever way you cut it. Have a pee jug and make sure to go "#2" before you hit the playa. You will be waiting in line a long, long time.

It's a rite of passage.

I think like one or two in a 5 hour span? When you gotta go, you gotta go.

I remember a potty at the turnoff north of Gerlach us Northerners appear from. After that, pre-playa, you can count dozens of people running out into the sagebrush to pee. The line moves slowly.

Fair enough. How fast does the line move? Are you creeping at 5mph for 5 hours or is it start and stop? (i.e. can you shut off the engine between traffic surges)

Start stop pretty much. There are times that you won't move for 5-10 mins, and then others where you're at a solid inch by inch creep.. just varies. I swear that every time I would turn the engine off, we move again...
