Uhaul/Penske?

Post by ajs » Thu Aug 11, 2011 8:35 am

Hi all, I've decided to go the box truck camping route, but Budget, who seems to be the preferred provider, is sold out. Does anyone have recent experience with either Uhaul or Penske? I've found threads here saying both companies will NOT rent to people going to Burning Man, but those threads were all at least 6 years old.

Also secondary question - is there any advantage or disadvantage to going with a cargo van versus a box truck?

Thanks!

Both Uhaul and Penske will indeed NOT rent to you. You'll have to pull a fast one on Uhaul just to make it work. Before I found Budget, I had to invent this whole story to the lady of my "move" that lasted 10 days yet was only between two locations that were within a couple hours of each other. They will not even rent same location drop off rentals around those days in the Reno/Sac area. They know exactly what's up. You would have to come from far away or find a really dumb rental agent AND have it slip by corporate. Even if you reserve, someone from corporate will call you and cancel your reservation. Same thing with Penske. For next year.. as with a ticket.. reserve your truck the same day you buy your ticket.. in JANUARY.

Cargo van vs truck? Size. With a truck I have a mobile living room that I can stand up and walk around in and throw a friggin dance party in if I want to. Hell.. it's bigger than my own master bedroom.

Call the Gentry Way location directly NOW. I just talked to them and they are still slipping people in directly.

Cargo van vs. Box Truck?

Box truck wins! Spacious, can stand inside, can invite folks inside, meant to be used a little harder than a van, and might stay a little cooler inside. Also makes a little natural shade (bigger than a van's shade) though to extend shade off the end is also nice and occasionally quite striking--I knew folks who used staked poles and theatre curtains for this. Gorgeous.

Penske in West Sacramento will NOT rent for BM. I've been dealing with them (for work business) and the salesman has told me that their shop is under strict orders to NOT rent for BM. The reason being that when they did, trucks where coming back totally trashed, including burns on the inside of the box. Like the people who rented it had a bbq inside the box...IDK how it didn't melt the plastic roof, but thats the reason he said they will not rent.
I have a salesman from Ryder coming in today, I'll hit him up and see what his shop is doing, and report back.

Ok, Ryder in West Sac will rent, as matter of fact they have rented a bunch of rigs to the company that is bringing in the ice. But, they are not sure how many box trucks (if any) they'll have avalible...

Ryder called me last year and cancelled after I made my reservation.

That blows JS!! I got my info from a salesman  who's trying to get me to sign a couple leases, so, I'd take the real life experinence and not trust Ryder then.
The salesman did, however, say DO NOT tell them that it's going to BM.

The problem is that they can put in the reservation, but corporate will flag it and cancel.. MAYBE. You're taking your chances when at this stage of the game chances shouldn't be taken.

Doc Pyro has reported that Budget in Sacramento is VERY burner friendly and he's friends with the GM. Have you tried contacting them?

See you in the dust..

EDIT: ..and now that my good deed for the day is done.. does that make room for all the bad ones that may be occurring in the next 8 hours?
