Is this map with north correct?

Post by phil » Thu Aug 18, 2011 8:40 am

This map shows sunrise, sunset, moonrise & set, and prevailing winds. Does it seem correct to the eplaya hive mind?

Center line of the city is usually oriented NE-SW, if that's what you're asking.

Re: accuracy, looks as accurate as the scale implies, ie not very. Looks like it was based on a cut-and-paste JPEG, not the Autocad original. And things always shift because the survey crew uses pretty crude layout equipment on the ground.

It looks reasonably accurate, which is probably the best you could really hope for.

The North part looks about right.
Though my confusion is with the Sunrise and Sunset. Are the orange lines supposed to look "3D" and rising off the page?

Being as far as we are in the Northern Hemisphere I do not believe that this time of year the Sun would rise from north of direct east, or set north of direct west.

Some body has to do it! lol.

No really, I don't know if the blue lines are supposed to be the shadows for the red/orange lines. Maybe the orange lines kind of point north, are supposed to show some angle up from the center. Like the person couldn't figure out how 2D diagrams work.

I believe the orange lines are for sunrise and sunset, as labelled, and that the bluish lines are for moonrise and moonset, and aren't labelled.

Phil's map shows south as 3 o'clock, were as the BM map shows south as 4:30.

That would make a big difference in my camp orientation.

Oops. Just to be sure I'm not credited with another person's hard work, it's not my map, it belongs to the person at the end of that link.

Thats how I first read it. How how on earth would the sun rise above direct east?
I understand the world rotates a good bit through the year, but does the sun ever rise above direct east?

There's an arrow pointing north in the lower right of the map. As you've noticed, the cross is not on the compass points.

Yeah, I always figured Equinox meant equal amount of day and night.
