RV Hire

Hi all, My girlfriend and I are looking to come to burning man this year. Weve just got back from travelling india and cant wait to get back on the road again!..burning man is something we've been dying to go to for years. A quick question if any of you could possibly answer were coming from the UK and want to hire a 2 berth RV, does anyone know anywhere that isnt charging ridiculuous amounts (been quoted $5000 recently) for a 10 day hire, I was thinking more $800-$1000 (or am I being a bit optimistic there?)

Check the prices from other cities, you don't have to come in from San Francisco do you? Boise, ID ro SLC, UT or even Las Vegas have plenty of RVs available and lower prices. Just an idea.

But yes, they are pricey, and $1000 won't get you far.

Do you have any friends here?
in the "few thousand" range, you might be able to buy and old RV, get it checked enough to drive there, use it, and re-sell.......but, that takes a lot of help on this end.
Also, there are some companies that rent RV's, trailers and such, "on playa".

Hi - welcome to ePlaya. I'm nudging this over to the transportation forum, since it would be a better fit. I'm not familiar with RV rental rates, but I think $1000 is more in line with the rental rate for a cargo van.

There is an outfit in Newcastle CA that has many RVs and they rent to burners. That's not to say they like renting to us, but what the hell. The hardest part is getting it cleaned properly before returning it. We take three of us on Labor Day not less than 7 hours to get ours in good enough shape to return it (and so they will rent to us again the following year). We even shampoo the carpeting. We do take seven hours with three of us to get it even remotely ready to return. I'll give you their name if I can have some assurances that you'll do what's necessary so the rest of us don't get forever screwed. Oh, their prices (at least to me) is for a 34' double slide out runs around $2800 plus generator use ($3/hour). You can go lower and higher if you want. PM me if interested.

$5000 is a huge amount of cash to shell out, and (IMHO), RVs take something away from the experience. They are too perfect, too organized, not enough chaos, etc.

Maybe look into having someone bring down everything you will need to camp? For example, with the same $5000, I could build you a 24' geodesic dome w/ shade cloth, a hexayurt, get an air mattress, extra tarps, good food, a shower, and still have about 3k left over for liquor (and other things, like a couple playa bikes, etc.).

My advice? Make friends with someone who owns a truck, "buy" some space in it for moving your stuff, and use a tent/yurt/something you made yourself. It's always fun to make things yourself!

One of these days I'm going to come up with the perfect retort I can just cut & paste every time some "Burnier Than Thou" states this. It's past tedious and now it's like that odor you try to ignore when you're at a friends house because you want to be polite.

If you have the funds to rent an RV and the time after to clean it (I don't think they guy above was kidding when he said 3 people, 7 hours each), go for it. Nice to have the kitchen, bathroom, and bed all in one little contained space.

I don't have the need or desire to RV to BM. I rented a cargo van my first two years. (About $1000 including gas, I drive from the bay area). I bought one last year for $3000 and I plan to use it for a few years.

It's the cleaning that finally got to me. I spent 8 hours cleaning the rentals in order to avoid surcharges from Enterprise. It's probably for the best that I bought a cargo van last year, because I think Enterprise was suspicious and probably would not have rented to me again anyway.

BM2010 - I rented from a C25 rv ( mid size, suits 2/3 burners) from EL Monte in Las Vegas for 2.3k$ , 8 days. The drive was a bit of a chore but the enthusiasm got us there in no time, or 10hrs +/-. On return to LV I googled an rv detail specialist who came to the hotel and cleaned in spick n span for less than 120$. I'm trying to avoid such a drive this year and can hopefully pick up an RV from SF or Sacramento, darn tootin

One's experience is one's own to which nothing can be added nor taken away. That said...I take multi-day backpacking trips carrying everything on my back. I also do multi-day sea kayaking trips and take extra goodies because I can. I take an RV to Burning Man...also because I can. If I meet someone out near the Temple is the fact that I'm camping with an RV in any way diminish my experience of the Temple? I didn't think so...

Hey, welcome! My husband and I will be burning for the first time this year. We reserved our rv before we even got tickets, and the cheapest we could find was $2,000 for the week(not including the other expenses that go along with an rv rental). It's also located a bit farther away in Sacramento, ca. We found it through a private seller, so check out Craigslist. The rental companies didn't quote us less than $4000.

We are actually trying to find some others to camp with us to defray costs a little bit... If you're interested, PM me and we can talk to see if we would be a good match for camping!
