There are some bike rental places around, a quick read through the first timers and survival guides will give you the info you seek.
There are also "yellow" bikes around the Playa for community use (they're actually green) but I don't know how hard it is to find one.

we're coming in wednesday so i dont think they're will be any left.

i was looking at that list of bike places in reno, and i guess i am more confused about logistics more than anything. we are getting there tuesday night at like 9 pm. staying in a hotel. taking the burner express the next day. but how do we go and get a bike when we dont have a car? we are going to stop at save mart but we are afraid that by wednesday all the bikes will be gone.

Those stores know we're coming so they're pretty well stocked up. It's a good bet they will have plenty of bikes to sell all week long. You could call the store you plan to stop at and ask them.

The "yellow" bikes are supposed to be one way rides which means after you get where you're going, you leave the bike out for someone else to use. Ideally, this would mean there should be "yellow" bikes around all week long. I'm not sure how well that works though.

One morning waiting in line for pancakes a guy rides up on a bike and, after discussion in line, gives the bike to a person standing there. His generosity was inspired when he saw a yellow/green bike and this bike chained together out in the playa. Outragged that the communal bike was locked, someone had stole it from the community, he trudged back to his camp, got a bolt cutter, made it back to the bikes, cut the chain, and liberated both bikes! I asked, "so, you stole that bike you just gave away?" as I handed him my maple syrup for his pancakes.

So, yeah, there might be bikes available on the playa....

Bikes aren't necessary, they are nice to have. Walking, you won't necessarily see as much of the city, but you'll see and do more in the part you do get to.

The best advice I can give you is don't fly in. You need a lot of stuff and you can't carry shit on a plane.

They aren't flying into the playa. Just to Reno and taking the Burner Bus in.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me
