Tips for a recently injured burner

Post by Gaelen » Sun Aug 18, 2013 9:54 am

So, we've been preparing for burningman for months and months and 2 weeks before the big event, what happens? My friend gets hit by a car and fractures his tibia. He's lucky to be alive. We know this. For the first week we weren't sure if he was going to be able to go to burningman (was on crutches), but this past Friday the doc said he can start to use a cane, as much as his leg can handle. Now he has 1 week to heal as much as possible. We really want him to be able to go to burningman.

I have read all the forum posts I can find about getting around BRC if you are disabled, but many of the recommendations don't apply to us- this has happened at the last minute, leaving us scrambling and we just don't have a lot of time or money to procure or make a mutant bicycle or motorized scooter.

So if anyone has some tips for us, it would really be appreciated. Would a wheelchair be a good idea? I'm not sure how difficult it would be to push across the playa...
http://brcmobility.com/ seems like an awesome resource and we'll definitely keep it in mind. How else might you recommend befriending art cars so we can get a ride to the big events? Luckily our camp is located very close to the 3 o'clock plaza.

Thank you for any suggestions you might have!

I have to assume that you mean a push (manual) chair. (Unless you know someone with a junker power chair.) Yes, could be useful. Better to have more options... The playa is soft in some places and will get softer as the event goes on. If you do get a chair (they sometimes show up at thrift stores...) practice with it, both pushing and auto-wheeling. Most people are clueless when it comes to a chair...

You should check in with BRC Mobility on arrival. They can be quite busy. You should bring a wheelchair with the largest tires you can find. The playa is sounding like the best in years for that. The other option is to come another year. Can't imagine a cast at the event will be comfortable.

Didn't CatWithTheFunnyHat have a fresh cast on before her 2012 burn?

Where the fuck is she anyway??? I miss her.

Then passed right by- And never knew.”

I did get to meet her a couple of times last year, at BDV, and she seemed to be getting around pretty well with crutches. (The portapotties were a bit of a challenge)
Last I knew, CatInTheFunnyHat was concentrating on her thesis, and temporarily 'signed off' of ePlaya.
She'll be baaaacckk........

(she'd better! I miss her great posts!)

I got the same news--and I'm really pleased that she's gonna finish with it.
And I miss her. She was wonderful. Hanging out with her was one of the best things about last year. She and I are going to be in the same camp next year, definitely something I look forwards to.
