1 1/4" trailer hitch bike rack - rack recommendations

Post by virgonberkeley » Sat Jul 05, 2014 10:36 am

Taking Honda Fit Sport 2007 with a 1 1/4" trailer hitch mount, wanting to know if the platform rack is better than a hanging bike rack. The platform is a lot more expensive, is it worth the extra cost for the added stability on the bumpy roads in BRC? Thoughts on this and recommendation for racks appreciated. Zinger (Berkeley, CA)

You won't be driving much on the BRC roads--only a few miles from the black top, park for the week and drive back out. Might still be worth it. I don't know.

Having used both types, I'd recommend the platform rack. It is much easier to put the bikes on, as you don't have to fuss getting frame on the hanging rack arms just right. Just set it in the holders and strap it in. The platform is also good if your bike is heavy or you are bringing multiple bikes. I've had the handing rack arms get bent just from driving on normal roads.

Most important in Nevada. Be sure your license plate is not obstructed AT ALL. Relocate it if you have to. Thats an easy excuse to pull you over.

Good choice getting the platform rack. I also drive a Fit, and last year I got a hanging hitch rack. It works, but the bikes really jostle around a lot and this year I'm going to try to strap them to my car more. I kind of wish for the platform rack, but not badly enough to upgrade.

If you don't already have a roof rack for your Fit, I highly recommend it -- I strapped a hexayurt to my roof last year, and I've put all kinds of other things on the roof too.

Also I second the person above who mentioned relocating your license plate. I bought a DOT-approved license plate light, wired it into my headlights, and ziptied my license plate with the light onto the outside of the bikes so the bikes aren't obstructing it. Maybe overkill, but I saw lots of other people with obstructed plates getting pulled over.
