Shipping a hexayurt

I will be building a 2-person hexayurt for this year. My original plan is to cut and build it in Washington DC and then ship it with a local burner group to and from Nevada - which is expensive to transport there and back. This Yurt will only ever be used in Nevada so I am re-considering whether it makes sense to ship it across the US each year. I know there are places near Reno that will store your gear for a year. What do you all think about building the Yurt in San Francisco (when I arrive the week before the Burn) and then paying to store it in Reno afterwards instead? Does anyone else have experience shipping Hexayurts from far away?

I am by no means a hexayurt expert, but have you built one before? If not, I would be nervous building one for the first time right before you head out to the playa.

I ran into a nice couple building their first in the parking lot of the Sands pre-burn last year. They seemed a bit frustrated that it was taking longer than planned. (tho I'm sure they worked it all out in the end)

Something to think about as you make your list of things to do that week.

Hopefully they were precut and tested first for fit. It takes 2-3 people about 10-15 minutes to put a 12ft one together. I put up 7 or 8 in about 2-3hrs, that was with quite a few breaks and other people asking for help with their tents and running power to debutantes with RVs

What size yurt? I'm bringing the 6ft stretch this year because I'm solo. Previous years I've brought the h12 (original Gupta design) with just 2 of us staying in that. So when you say "2 person" ? If it's the smaller 6 ft stretch and you have a week over here, no problemo. Even the bigger one can be done when you get here. Make sure you've got your 6 in tape though, don't know how easy it is to find in SF. $250 round trip? What would the cost for storage be for a year? I'd go cheapest and if you have your yurt back home you can prep it (cleaning off old tape, repairing, etc) ahead of time and at your leisure.

Totally do-able. I did this last year, coming in from Sydney, Australia. I made a regular h12 hexayurt, ordered all the panels for pick up, had the tape delivered to a friend in SF. Spent a few hours in SF cutting the panels and tape sealing the exposed edges. Then made all of the camp-danger style hinges in the wal-mart car park in Reno before heading out to the playa. If you have all of the materials and tools waiting for you, and a few hands on deck, and have read through the instructions carefully and repeatedly, you can get it done in 1 day.

After the burn, I rented a storage unit in Fallon. Costs me $25/month.
