What in the hell is that ANTLER thing, I-80 Eastern Nevada??

Post by sunnystar » Wed Jun 22, 2005 8:30 pm

I have GOT to know what that thing is! Anyone who travels to burning man from the east on 80 HAS to have seen this thing. It's on the southern side of the freeway in Eastern Nevada.

We refer to it as the antler compound. It looks like a structure made with or covered in antlers. There is a huge antler fence around the property with one main and several smaller structures inside.

I have driven past this thing a hundred times and I STILL don't know what it is. Has anyone ever stopped to look at it? Know what it's called? I have just GOT to know, it's driving me crazy, I've googled it all over the place and can't find any information. Does anyone have a picture?

Sunny

I believe you are refering to Thunder Mountain. It is near Imlay, about half way between Winnemucca and Lovelock. I have pictures of it 20 years ago. At that time it was amazing. It had many old military vehicles, typewriters cemeted into the walls and Cadilacs turned on their sides for fencing. It had a sign that explained how the BLM had screwed the Native Americans of that area out of their land and how the BLM treated them. It was a really moving experience to wander through there. I had the good sense to take pictures whick I cherish now, as most of the old meaning and feeling is gone. I drive by it eight or nine times a year and I still stop every once in a while and just look at it.

And it's still open, or at least it was when I was coming back from the Burn last year...The house is fenced off, and restoration is ongoing (!) but you can walk around the structures and through the old ruin to the East. Really, really amazing and very much worth a stop. Here's a link to info, and a really fun resource for weird roadside exploration:

Enjoy!
